This year Saxion’s annual prize for the best dissertation, the Saxion Dissertation Award, has been won by two of our international graduate students of Environmental Science & Technology, Nadine Tchetkoau Wacka and Wikke Novalia.

Their research, entitled ‘Selection Guide of Simple Drinking Water Treatment Technologies for Small Communities in Developing Countries’, resulted in a practical guide to suitable drinking water technology for deprived countries. The students put forward a practical solution to the problem and in doing so, answered questions many scientists have sought to answer.

The jury praised the duo for the practical approach to their research question. “They really made use of each other’s strengths and succeeded in delivering a well-written thesis,” said the chair of the jury and mayor of Deventer, mr. Andries Heidema. Unanimously the jury selected Tchetkoau and Wikke’s dissertation as the winning paper, granting it a total of 234 out of 250 points, the highest score in several years.
