International Saxion students win Dutch award
Thu 15 April 2010 - 12:25
On Friday 9 April a group of four international Saxion students was awarded the first prize in the ‘Zuiderzeeland Award 2010’. In the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander this water management prize was presented to the winners from Saxion University and Rotterdam University by the governor of Flevoland, Mr. Leen Verbeek.
The students’ assignment was to re-design Flevoland with water as a core ingredient. In the plan of the Saxion students, called ‘Azure Flevoland’, former islands Urk and Schokland re-appeared as islands, new robust nature development was planned as well as floating areas in the city of Almere.
Saxion’s group of students was an interdisciplinary team, made up of spatial planners, urban designers and environmental scientists. This approach was evident in the project. The jury especially appreciated their creative solutions for water-related problems in the Dutch polders.
The group consisted of Indonesian students Perdana Nugroheni (UNDIP), Maria Bernadet Karina and Mochammad Yusni Aziz (ITS) and Yeshey Lotay from Bhutan. They are enrolled in the final year Bachelor programme of Saxion School of Environmental Planning and Building. During the meeting in Lelystad, which was presented by tv-host Ms. Inge Diepman, the current hot-issues concerning the role of participation and communication in water management were discussed. Ideas were exchanged to make a career in the water sector more attractive to young people.
