Let me first introduce myself. I am Sylvain FANIELLE, a law student from Luik in Belgium. In my country a lot of colleges or universities only offer a national law program with very few courses on international matters. Since I have always been interested in international law, I decided to do my Erasmus in a Dutch university that proposes a wide range of courses dealing with international matters.
The best choice you can make!
Enschede seemed to be a good choice. Indeed, it is a very « cosy » town, not too small and not too big and where it is easy for a student to find accomodation or catering and to do his shopping. The centre is full of nice bars and restaurants where it is easy to meet students from all over the world. Whether it is in Twente University or Saxion University of Applied Sciences, you will always have a party to attend, a sport to do or new friends to make.
My first day at Saxion was quite impressive. The school is much bigger than mine in Belgium. The premises are very modern. You can find quiet places to work, a delicious restaurant and any services such as a bank, a doctor’s office and a good bookshop. The school has got state-of-the-art technological equipment, which makes it very easy to prepare outstanding presentations.
I would describe the courses as very dynamic, practical and interesting. They are all focused on international matters and current world dilemmas. Since you have a lot of presentations to make and essays or reports to write, you really improve your legal or business skills. I do think that studying is much easier and more useful when you do a lot of research and writing on your own.
What is also really nice in Saxion is that the teachers are always available for you. If you have any questions on the courses or exams, or even any comments to still improve the quality of the courses, the teachers will always be ready to listen to you and answer your questions directly. You are on very good terms with them and it is even quite common to have drinks together. That would never happen in Belgium!
The last thing I would like to point out is the international atmosphere. Saxion is full of foreign students. You will never feel lonely in this Dutch environment. You will always be able to learn about other cultures and make friends from the five continents, from America to China!
I was an Erasmus student in Enschede from September 2010 to January 2011. It was a great experience I will never forget. I will definitely stay in touch not only with the students I met but also with my teachers; Be sure about one thing: an Erasmus in Enschede is the best choice you can make!
