Introduction
The educational philosophy of Saxion School of Environmental Planning and Building is to prepare students for a professional career. This can not be done by only classes and books, but by applying knowledge in real life practical situations (projects). In these projects students from different disciplines, like Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Urban and Regional Planning work together to analyse certain situations and design solutions. Each student brings its own expertise and cultural background. Project work requires basic theoretical understanding from several fields of study and many different skills like co-operation skills, negotiating skills, communication skills, cultural awareness and research skills (Methodology).
Examples of these projects are Environmental Impact Assessments for a new airport, railroad, a river by-pass, the redesign of a harbour area or the design of a new dwelling area. Or projects on Water Management like constructions of dams and dikes, multifunctional use of space, EU- framework directive Water, Ecological corridors along Dutch rivers, rain water harvesting and water scarcity in Africa, etc.
To conduct these researches students are trained in the aforementioned professional skills. To learn the basic concepts lectures and excursions are organised.
This programme has a duration of 3 to 6 months, depending on what subjects you take!
