It often seems that economic development always causes environmental pollution and degradation of environmental qualities. Environmental scientist raise awareness for the negative effects of degradation but also like to prevent new problems. If e.g. the cost for ecological services and protection of environmental quality is taking into consideration at the design table of new development projects many, adverse effects can be reduced or even avoided. This requires professionals with a creative and open attitude to new sustainable solutions and excellent communication and co-operation skills with stakeholders from many different disciplines, including designers, engineers, and urban planners. Now environmental problems change from local and regional problems, like noise and soil pollution to international or even global problems like global warming and climate change it requires also environmental scientists with intercultural skills to be able to implement successful approaches in other area’s with respect to economical and cultural differences.

Main professional competencies of Environmental Science:
ES 1: Raise environmental awareness
ES 2: Conduct environmental research
ES 3: Design and consider solutions to environmental issues
ES 4: Prepare environ. policy recommendations

Besides professional knowledge and skills, (bachelor) professionals also need to apply general competencies:

A4: Analytical thinking and problem-solving
A5: Applied research

The programme consists of 6 units:

1. Induction unit: an introduction to the approach, various disciplines, facilities and students of the Saxion School of Environmental Planning and Building (1 ECTS-credits)

2. Professional skills training (5 ECTS-credits)

  • Research Methodology
  • Communication Skills, which comprises two main aspects: communication skills, intercultural relationships and group processes; and proficiency in English: training in oral presentation and writing skills.

3. Sustainable Area Development (8 ECTS-credits)

  • Interdisciplinary project for Sustainable Area Development, Environmental Strategic Planning as a policy instrument.
  • Developing sustainable scenario’s and identifying indicators for environmental and spatial quality.
  • Research Methodologies of integral area development and Environmental Impact Assessment: prediction of effects, scenario development, Multi-Criteria Analysis, potential solutions.

4. Integrated Water Management (12 ECTS-credits)

  • Form: Lectures, excursions, skills training, company visits, guest lectures, prepare students for an individual research. Resulting in an poster display, presentation and article for a water seminar.
  • Content:
    • Water Quantity Management, like flood protection, creating retention and storage capacity, river and coastal infrastructures,
    • Water Quality Management, including drinking water supply and sanitation,
    • Environmental Management in industry,
    • Water as natural resource for e.g. drinking water supply, agriculture and ecology.

5. Capita Selecta Environmental Science (6 ECTS-credits)
Within this part the following subjects will be discussed:

  • Influencing the (re)design of area’s in a more sustainable way
  • Importance of participating in and Influencing decision making for sustainable development
  • Optimizing cost and efficiency for applying (environmental) technology
  • Noise problems, often related to traffic and specially airports
  • Nature conservation, how can we connect natural areas in Europe? How can we protect endangered specious in other parts of the world? How can we protect ecological services?
  • Waste management, what can be done to decrease the amount of waste, how is it recycled or re-used? How can we achieve cradle to cradle?
  • Comparison of environmental Policy plans (different countries or different scale levels),
  • Air quality problems e.g. Nitrogen dioxide monitoring and analyses of indoor air in student houses (ET).
  • Preventing problems by prediction of fate of new chemicals with the Mackay Model.
  • Soil pollution and soil remediation techniques.

6. Research Project (28 ECTS-credits)
For the thesis project students conduct a research on a current problem in the field of Environmental Science and Technology or Sustainable development. Staff members of the School of Environmental Planning and Building in cooperation with the Research Center of Urban Environmental Development support the students, in cooperation with professional organisations and companies.

This course is aimed at:

  • Dutch students with at least 3 years education in a similar course and interested in a multicultural aspect within their major.
  • All students from around the world who have studied at least 3 years Environmental Science and who wish to obtain a Dutch bachelor degree in Environmental Science.

Our general entry requirements apply. 
In addition to these general requirements:

  • 3 year education in a similar course or 4 year in a related course,
  • Work experience can compensate education.

The course in environmental sciences equips the graduates for a number of specific positions:

  • At government institutions;
  • At national authorities;
  • At firms of consulting engineers;
  • At ecology groups and non-governmental organisations;
  • At industries.
