The hospitality & tourism business is currently the fastest-growing industry. As people are enjoying more spare time and tourism expenditures continue to increase sharply, the industry is facing many challenges such as dynamics in marketing channels, skills shortages, more demanding consumers, emerging markets in tourism and sustainable entrepreneurship.
The Saxion Hospitality Business School offers 2 bachelor programmes that perfectly address the need for people who are educated in the international hospitality business and who are eager to deal with these industry challenges:
These two programmes share a focus on creating the conditions that enable people to travel, enjoy their leisure time and find suitable accommodation while they are away from home. These conditions should generate a healthy profit for the company while also ensuring that guests and customers are happy and entirely satisfied with the service they receive.
Tourism Management is the ideal programme for people with a flair for languages, creativity, conceptual thinking, commercial insight and a service-minded approach. In addition to management skills, considerable attention is paid to professional skills and theory in order to help you develop the right attitude for the hospitality sector. On the Tourism Management programme, you learn how to successfully lead a business in the international tourism & leisure industry as a manager, entrepreneur or consultant. You learn to translate the wishes of your guests into appealing, innovative tourism and leisure concepts.
The Introduction module focuses on communication and hospitality performance. You will develop your personal qualities and self-confidence, and also learn how to harness your experience and enthusiasm as a hospitality expert. Special focus within communication lies with business writing.
The Destination Development semester focuses on the development and marketing of a destination from a strategic perspective. Adopting the role of a governmental policy employee, you will be challenged to write a long-term vision for the destination's Ministry of Tourism. This policy needs to be presented to the Ministry of Tourism, taking into consideration restraints, changes and implications for the organisational structure of the destination's management. You will gain a deeper understanding of destination development by gaining a sound theoretical basis which you will then need to apply in a real-life case. Furthermore, you will learn to understand the complex interaction between government and the various stakeholders involved in destination development. Finally, you will gain insight into the effects of long-term development of a destination and possible governmental influences.
Business English 3 is a course in strategic business communication skills, comprising negotiating skills, promotional writing and strategic speaking skills. You will be able to observe, analyse and actively respond to a prospective business partner at management level within a tourism-management context. Furthermore, you will be required to produce a variety of promotional materials. The focus is mainly on content rather than English accuracy.
The Quantitative Research module is designed to improve your research skills, and you will learn how to conduct a survey in the field. At the end of this module, you will be familiar with the essential elements of research methodology. In addition, you will have acquired relevant knowledge and skills for setting up and executing quantitative research. This includes collecting quantitative data from a large number of research units and analysing the data using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
During the thesis semester, you will work on a project individually in which both research and management advice play an essential role. The starting point is an external client's management problem. You are first required to develop a thesis proposal which contains the plans for the thesis project. Then you will write the actual thesis, which is a research and advisory report.
Entry to the short degree programme is open to Dutch and international students alike.
- A minimum of three years of higher education (leading to a bachelor's degree) in Tourism or Hotel Management or a closely related field such as consumer affairs, catering management or other related management fields. A study path will be determined (how many and which semesters) based on previous education, knowledge and/or vocational experience.
- TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0
Before being accepted onto the Tourism Management programme, you will need to pass an additional study choice check as part of the compulsory admission procedure. If the outcome is approved by the admission officer, you will be allowed to start.
A person in possession of a diploma not explicitly included in this regulation can be exempted from the entry requirement mentioned in this section at the discretion of the director, providing that the diploma is at least equivalent to one of the diplomas mentioned.
The director’s judgement will at all times be subject to advice by NUFFIC concerning the equivalence of diplomas.

Any educational programme entails costs. Depending on your nationality, you may need to arrange a visa in addition to paying your course fees. Moreover, you need to buy textbooks, purchase an HBS suit and pay for any excursions that form part of your programme. Tourism Management costs
We consider it important for our students to dress smartly in professional situations. Therefore you are required to wear an HBS suit on a number of occasions, such as on study trips, during guest lectures, company visits, when holding presentations and when organising events. Books and syllabi
The cost of the mandatory textbooks is approx. €525. The recommended books cost an additional ± €150. The costs for study materials generally decrease year on year as the degree programme progresses.
The first year includes a study trip, which costs approx. €350. Additional excursions are organised. It is not compulsory to participate in the trip and excursions but you are strongly recommended to do so.
Studying in Deventer
When choosing where to study, the surroundings are of course extremely important – not only the town or city, but also the university's facilities and the atmosphere within the School.
Tourism Management is based in Deventer, which is situated in the east of The Netherlands, just over an hour's drive from Amsterdam. With 100,000 inhabitants, Deventer is one of the country's Top 30 biggest cities. The origins of the city date back more than 1,200 years, and there are still many signs of its rich history in the old city centre.
The city centre
Saxion is just a few minutes' walk away from the city centre. There are countless bars and pavement cafés where you can catch up with fellow students in between classes or at the end of the day. Many of the terraces in Deventer's historic centre are located around the old weigh house, called ‘De Waag’. Deventer is also renowned for its festivals. If you're studying in this city, you can't miss the Dickens Festival and 'Deventer op Stelten'. For film fans there is 'Film op de Brink' and bookworms can enjoy Europe's biggest book market. As you can see, there's plenty to do in Deventer.
Saxion Deventer is less than a 10-minute walk from the central railway station. Saxion provides excellent support during your studies. For example, on-site facilities at Saxion include a library, studielandschap, Student Desk and an IC Helpdesk. Needless to say, there's more to life at Saxion than just studying. We also want to make it enjoyable and educational for you: there's a café, a large canteen and an auditorium where interesting debates and seminars are organised.
Global Plaza organises social events and excursions for (international) HBS students. In the past academic year, activities organised by Global Plaza included a Dutch culture quiz, a Pancake Night, a Karaoke Café and a Movie Night. The monthly Global Plaza newsletter keeps you informed about the upcoming Global Plaza events as well as about Saxion International Office activities. Moreover, you receive information about what's on in Apeldoorn and Deventer plus numerous tips and tricks. We hope that this helps you to get to know your new student home, Dutch culture and of course your fellow students in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.
Global Plaza is also responsible for the HBS buddy project. As an international student, this may be the first time you have ever been to The Netherlands and many things will be different from what you are used to in your home country. Therefore, you are assigned a 'buddy' (student from a year or two above you on the same degree programme) who will show you around in your first few weeks. The HBS buddy project has its own (restricted-access) Facebook group where you can ask all kinds of questions about your new degree course and associated matters. That enables you to read about the experiences of other students and buddies too.

At the end of the four years, you will have gained the right hospitality know-how and attitude and you will be ready to set to work in the professional service sector.
Personal contact with lecturers
In addition to ensuring a pleasant atmosphere between students, we also believe it is extremely important to stimulate good contact between students and lecturers. Tourism Management lecturers make an effort to get to know the students better so that everyone feels at ease. This also makes it more likely that students will ask the lecturers questions, plus lecturers are keen to learn from their students' experiences. Meetings are held regularly in which class representatives sit down with lecturers to discuss all kinds of matters, such as exams, the course material or the timetables. This enables us to work closely with you, the student, to ensure that your time spent with us is successful, fun and educational.
Topical teaching and research
Because our lecturers are often still active in the industry and have many contacts within organisations, they know better than anyone what is going on in this international sector, and their lessons[BW1] directly reflect that. This ensures that you gain topical and relevant knowledge which is important, both now and in the future.
Often, sector knowledge comes not only from the industry and our lecturers, but also from the Saxion Research Centre Hospitality. The research centre is made up of professors, researchers and students who are conducting practical research into topical issues within the hospitality sector on a daily basis. The knowledge gained by the research centre is subsequently incorporated into HBS lessons.
In contact with other hospitality-related programmes
Saxion's Tourism Management, together with the Hotel Management and Facility Management programmes, forms part of the Hospitality Business School. You will occasionally collaborate with students from those programmes too, which is a fun and also educational way of gaining a fresh perspective on hospitality and your chosen field. After all, they have a slightly different view of things than you, a tourism student.
Needless to say, ultimately you should choose the degree programme and university which is most suited to you and where you feel most at home.
