On 5 July 2017, Chinese company DJI, global market leader in civilian drone development and production, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Space53, a public-private partnership for developing unmanned systems that is based in Enschede, the Twente region.
The Space53 innovation and test centre is situated in Twente, a region in the east of the Netherlands, where one of Saxion’s campuses is located too. Space53 works closely together with Saxion and other knowledge institutes, but also with various companies and security services from the Twente region. The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding shows that Twente offers a solid foundation and valuable tools for innovation and business opportunities.
The Chinese technology company Dà-Jiāng Innovations Science and Technology Co., Ltd (DJI) has chosen to set up a training programme for the development of civilian drones for public safety at the Technology Base in Twente, the east of the Netherlands. The objective of their collaboration will be to save more lives through the deployment of drones by security services such as fire departments and police departments.
DJI has chosen Space53 due to Twente’s unique eco system: its combination of knowledge, room, and partnerships with knowledge institutes and security services. In collaboration with the Twente Fire Department, a training programme for rescue workers will be developed, geared towards the deployment of drones during security operations.
Space53 facilitates the entire innovation process for unmanned systems by providing access to a unique eco system. The organisation works closely with the corporate world, various security services, and research and knowledge institutes such as Saxion University of Applied Sciences, but also University of Twente and Twente ROC school.
Space53 provides access to an airport and many research and testing facilities. Smart City Enschede provides the necessary space and conditions for the development and testing of drone systems and works towards ensuring modern regulation within the Netherlands. DJI is the market leader in the development and manufacture of civilian drones and aerial photography technology, for both business and private use. DJJ’s drones are used for aerial photography and film making, but the company has also been focusing more and more on security and inspection applications. To optimise the deployment of drones in these fields, DJI is now committing itself to working on training programmes and procedures in collaboration with end users.
