Medical care in the Netherlands is of high quality. Since medical costs for treatment can be very high, it is important to be properly insured, especially if you need specialist help from the hospital.

In the Netherlands, you need to see the family doctor first before you can get a referral for a specialist in the hospital (except for emergencies, please see First Aid section below)
