A classic definition of 'management' is: 'getting things done'. This may also be translated as 'influencing human output', measurable in a number of dependent variables, such as productivity and work satisfaction. An organisation is a complex mix of independent variables on individual, group and organisational system levels. These independent variables may be the presumed cause of some change in a dependent variable and can be influenced by managers.

In this course, the following independent variables will be assessed: motivation, decision making, both individually and within groups, dealing with conflict, power and politics & communication. In organisations, these management activities are mostly situated at group level, where the operational management of people and processes takes place. We will also look more closely at planning and control, which forms the link between group and organisation systems level.

HR professionals are required to have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the work of managers in organisations in which they are operating. HR professionals will be closely working together with managers in organisations to influence and direct human behaviour in such a way, that the organisational goals can be attained more readily.

HR professionals may also find their future work is in a managerial position, in an HR department or as part of a team. Students will therefore practice the basic management skills of decision making, co-ordinating and communicating in both individual and group learning tasks.
