This course gives students an introduction to the discipline of accounting and financial management. The demand for accountability among all business functions has never been greater. People in an organisation may still see HR as focusing on the ‘soft’ side of business only. Boosting your financial intelligence can help change that perception. If you can speak the language, ask questions, and use the information, you will help to give your department a stronger voice in business decisions.

Competences

  • AMA-IHRM 1 Credible Activist
  • AMA-IHRM 2 Strategic Positioner

Learning goals

In the course we will learn you, to:

  • speak the language. Finance is the language of business. Whether it is comfortable for you or not, the one thing every organization has in common is numbers and how those numbers are tabulated, analysed, and reported. In HR you need to use the language to be taken seriously and to communicate effectively.
  • ask questions. We want you to look at financial reports and analyze them with a questioning eye. It’s important to understand the what, why, and how of the numbers you are using to make decisions. Since every company is different, sometimes the only way to figure out all those parameters is to ask questions
  • use the information. Use the information learned in the financial courses to help the business unit you support improve cash flow. Use it to assess your company’s results. Your job will be more fun, and your impact on the company’s performance will be greater (adopted from Berman & Knight, 2008).
