This course gives students an introduction into the discipline of group dynamics. At the end of the course, students will recognise what group dynamics are, what effective teamwork is and how this should be communicated within a group. In this course, the students will also look at diversity within a group. Moreover, the course will delve into some basic communication models, which are of great importance to functioning in a team.

The main subjects in this course will be:

  • Introduction to Group Dynamics 
  • Effective Teamwork 
  • Communicating within Groups 
  • Diversity within Groups 
  • Effective use of Power within Groups 
  • Effective Decision-making and Fostering Creativity 
  • Managing Conflicts of Interest 

Group Dynamics 1 is mainly an introduction to group dynamics, highlighting some of the important issues faced by groups. In Group Dynamics 2 (Year 2) the course will go into more depth with regard to group dynamics and will take the view of the 'expert' into account. Whereas Group Dynamics 1 will be mostly consist of theory and some exercises, Group Dynamics 2 will consist of some theory and mostly  practical exercises.

Test criteria

The course will be evaluated by means of a written assessment. In this assessment, theory and insight will be tested. The questions will be both multiple choice as well as open questions.

The student knows and can recall:

  • the basics of Group Dynamics including history and origin.
  • the essence of effective teamwork.
  • the pros and cons of diversity within groups.
  • how to use power effectively within groups.

The student knows and can recall, analyse and apply:

  • ways to handle group conflict and resistance.
  • the methods to use when there are different areas of conflicts of interest within groups.
  • different aspects of communication within groups.
