During the preliminary research, students will execute and elaborate on the actions as described in the plan. Students define the problem statement and specific goals for the project. Then an analysis is made of the necessary project data and a collection of this data will take place. If the data is not available, students will generate the data based on relevant research methods. Examples of activities in this phase are the analysis of soil composition, current spatial development, stakeholders, accessing terrain and/or water maps.
In the preliminary research, students collect relevant data that ties in with their specialities. Students will use their combined research results to create a design context that is as complete as is possible. Because it is not relevant for the design process to determine what information was brought on by which student, students will be assessed as a group in this part of the graduation project. Together with the group, the student will write a report of the preliminary research.
Together with the graduation group, students are to write a report on the preliminary research. About two to three weeks before handing in the report the graduation group presents the results to the graduation committee. The feedback on the presentation can be incorporated in the report. The presentation is also part of the assessment of the preliminary research
