In the Simulation and Realisation Project the focus is on the power supplies of electrical and electronic systems. At the other hand applying this system in a smart useful system is an another objective. The V-model design approach is used, with emphasis on the bottom part of the V-model. The system requirements and a functional block diagram are provided to the project groups and the product design owner (customer) is available to clarify the product requirements and approve changes to these requirements. The applied research of this project deals with questions regarding the choices in translating the functional design into a technical design. Simulations must be used during the design of the circuits and the behaviour of the circuits must be verified before realisation. The design of the tests and the actual testing is an important part of the project. At the start the main system requirements are given and the functional design is known. The project group works on the technical design, simulation and realisation. The V-model and the project emphasis is shown in Figure 1. Professional and project-based working is also important in this project.

Learning goals

All students will be able to: • Work in a professional way in a product design team. • Apply knowledge of Power Electronics (PE) and Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC). • Carry out a design related research by using application notes and data sheets. • Acquire knowledge and insight in a specific energy efficiency related design. • Use simulation software as provided by component manufactures i.e. LT Spice, Multi-sim.

According to task taken up in the project, students will be able to • Research, design, simulate, realise and test a part of an electrical / electronic system. • Design boards by a CAD package like Ulti board. • Design embedded software for control of power converters. • Use measurement instruments, tools, laser cutter and 3D printer.
