The Creative Media and Game Technologies degree programme

(Formerly Art & Technology, Game Design & Production and Game Engineering)

A virtual reality game, an interactive video on YouTube, visual effects in movies, applications with augmented reality features: these have more in common than you might think. These products are all created by teams that combine creativity and technology, thus constantly stretching the boundaries of technology. The CMGT programme offers you precisely this magical combination.

“We are pushing the boundaries of reality”

What will you be learning?

Interactive media? Games? The choice is up to you!

As the name indicates, CMGT will teach you everything you want to know about Creative Media and Game Technologies. This is an enormously wide field of study. After a broad-based orientation phase, it is up to you to decide which area you want to specialise in. Do you have a broad interest in interactive media or are you passionate about creating games?

At CMGT, you can determine your own study path.

3 Professional roles

We will focus on 3 roles that you encounter everywhere in the professional field. In the first year, you can experiment with these roles and subsequently choose the role that suits you best.

Artist

the talented creator who is responsible for the visual representation within interactive media

You will be taught subjects like:

  • Sound Design
  • 3D modelling
  • Cinematics

Designer

the creative- and technical architect who develops the user experience.
You will therefore be taught important "Artist-as-Engineer" subjects and specific design subjects such as:

  • Design thinking, Game Design
  • User Interface Design
  • User Experience Design and Behaviorism

Engineer

the structured realist who is responsible for the technical realization

You will be taught subjects like:

  • Game programming
  • Physics programming
  • Algoritms
  • Web Technology
  • Unity Game Scripting

Year 1 and 2

The initial set-up of CMGT is broad. We will focus on the three roles that you will encounter in a large part of the professional field:

Artist
Designer
Engineer

In the first year, you will be able to experiment with these roles and you will subsequently choose the role that suits you best. Depending on your preference, you will either move more in the direction of general interactive media or you will specialize specifically in entertainment and serious games.

Year 3 and 4

During the previous two years, you will have discovered what your favorite area of interest is in the creative sector. In your third and fourth years, you will apply your knowledge and put your skills into practice. In your third year, you will choose an internship and minor, either in the Netherlands or abroad. We have a large international network that will be at your disposal. In the fourth year, you will participate in a multidisciplinary Smart Solutions project to research and implement innovation by combining your expertise with other domains. Upon graduation you receive the title of Bachelor of Science.

First of all, you have to meet the general entry requirements. Besides that, the following applies to all students wanting to enrol in Creative Media and Game Technologies.

The additional intake of the Creative Media & Game Technology (CMGT) programme consists of 3 elements:
1. Assignment;
2. Samples of previous trials/work (basic portfolio);
3. (Skype) Interview.

During the intake, we’ll assess your ability to:
1. Creatively use technology;
2. Translate your imagination into a specific solution.

Within one week after the interview, you’ll receive an e- mail with our decision regarding your admission to the Creative Media & Game Technology programme. This decision is final and binding.
