Outdoor Fabrics

Textile has many technical applications, such as canvas for military tents, trailer tents, roof/shelters and awnings. The demand for technical canvas is increasing in which textile contributes to a better (climate) comfort inside the tent.

The improvement of comfort properties of tent cloths is a technical challenge because of the complex 3D structure of a tent canvas. Surroundings factors such as temperature, air moisture, sun and wind play an important role, but also material properties like fabric type, breathability and UV-resistant coatings do. To improve the comfort level of a canvas there is need for an quantitative method for the measurement.

The project Outdoor Fabrics focuses on the development of a quantitative measurement method to determine the comfort properties of a tent canvas.

Projectgoal

The project Outdoor Fabrics focuses on the development of a quantitative measurement method to determine the comfort properties of a tent canvas. The project is divided into two parts. The first phase focuses on the definition of (climate) comfort, specific for tent applications. The focus of the project is related to the tent fabric and not about the tent design. The second phase focuses on the development of the test methods to measure comfort, and to eventually determine material characteristics that are of importance in a tent canvas. This project is being carried out in collaboration with TenCate Outdoor Fabrics BV.
