Improving quality of life using smart-city applications
Data-based applications for use in public spaces that contribute to the quality of life in the city and region. Mobility, attractive city centres and (ground) water management are the focus areas. Our research and development projects are characterised by a sociotechnical approach in which we involve stakeholders and communities in all phases of the design process.
Main research themes
Our research and development projects are characterised by a sociotechnical approach that involves stakeholders at every stage of the data visualisation and persuasive technology design process. We not only develop technology, but also encourage its use through careful stakeholder analysis, community building and communication campaigns. The stakeholders are not just passive users - they are an important part of the (technical) solution itself. Data are essential building blocks for these applications. Climate adaptation, energy transition and sustainable mobility are our application areas.
We conduct research into approachable, inclusive methods of participation. In doing so, we focus on both methods for designing smart-city technology and methods for engaging policymakers.
We conduct research into how persuasive technology can be used to help residents make sustainable choices in a way that is appropriate to their circumstances, background and affinity for sustainability. For us and our partners, the issue of energy poverty is important.
Smart-city technology runs the risk of excluding groups in society that do not have the required digital or data skills. That is why our research project is looking at how smart-city technology can be made more inclusive. For example, approachable, motivating data visualisations.

Netmobil
The Netmobil project was about combining different transport options into a demand-driven mobility app to promote mobility in the Achterhoek region. A key example of a project within our focus area: Improving quality of life with smart-city applications.
How can we work together?
Smart Cities distinguishes itself by gearing projects to the needs and demands of its partners and society. We provide support throughout the process in all areas from funding to securing the application.
