The Lab Leadership runs over a period of 10 weeks. The activities in the lab will be structured around the six phases of a research activity:

(1) analysis of organisational context and leadership issue
(2) applicable theoretical perspective
(3) choice of method and research activity
(4) analysis of results
(5) presentation of conclusions and
(6) actionable recommendations.

The final product will be a written research and advisory report, which will be delivered to the client and will describe each stage of the research cycle in a concise and complete manner with a focus on actionable recommendations and with respect for the privacy of the individuals involved. Three themes are defined and also overlap:  Contemporary leadership styles and organisational change Innovative Leadership  Devolution, which is a term for the partnership between line management and HR. The focus in the lab will be on the behaviour of first line managers and the responses of their followers, according to one or two of the themes of leadership.

Test criteria

Students can analyse the leadership behaviour of line managers by conducting qualitative research with first-line managers and their followers. They will describe leadership behaviour in a narrative way. In the workshops, students take the lead by preparing a learning session and exchange knowledge about leadership, based on scientific articles in the areas of the leadership themes. Students will also receive training on research methods and instruments. In preparation for the progress meetings in the afternoon, students need to follow the time table, in which they are expected to show three intermediate assignments in week 3, 6 and 8 during the progress meetings and will receive feedback from their teacher/coach, based on their questions. They will also keep a logbook to keep track of the process in the group and need to show this during the progress meetings in week 3, 6 and 8. The final product is a research and advisory report which should be send to the client and delivered on Blackboard in week 10. Two clients have offered an assignment to the lab. Within one theme and one client assignment, five student groups (each consisting of four or five students) will gather data based on an identical research design, to be agreed on beforehand. Afterwards, they share their data to have a more solid empirical base to write the results and conclusion chapters and develop an advisory report.
