This course is the follow up to the first year course on International Employment and Comparative Law. It gives students the basic knowledge needed to enter a discussion with the legal department/legal adviser of the organisation. In ICLL, 2 students will learn about international organisations like the EU and the ILO. Furthermore this course will make them aware of the legal complications of cross border working and it will give them some universal basic principles on issues such as equal treatment, minimum wages and social security.

Learning goals

In short; students will understand the basic concepts of international law, and based on this knowledge they will be able to:

- handle contracts with employees. More specific students will learn to advise on contracts with expats, secondment contracts and cross-border work and their legal consequences;

- deal with different law systems and know what court has the competency to rule on conflicts;

- contribute to the desire of employers to use more flexible ways of working;

- understand the functioning of works councils and trade unions and how they influence the employer-employee relationship;

- understand how legal developments have influence on (the policy of) the organization;

- advise employers on employment relationships;

- understand the legal implications of reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, and the issues HR-officers have to deal with.
