HR professionals regularly are confronted with organizational ‘problems’ (i.e. an unsatisfying situation) and/or changes. For instance: culture, strategic, or social changes or swifts, demotivated or unsatisfied employees, etc.

Conducting research is a means for better understanding (gain knowledge of) this kind of problems that have a practical application. The purpose of conducting applied research is solving them by extracting the best possible solution or intervention (on the basis of the gathered data). Applied research consists of a set of different phases (the research cycle): 1) problem analysis, 2) research design, 3) data collection, 4) data analysis, 5) report (Verhoeven, 2011).

In Research 1, students will conduct a descriptive research (in groups of 4). In this course, they will walk through all of the phases of the research cycle. However, emphasize is on the problem analysis and design phase. The problem analysis phase is extremely important, since in this phase the project and research objectives will be shaped.
