In this module you will learn more about wireless communication. We start by using a simple 2.4 GHz radio module and use these radios to build simple networks. In the second half of the module we will use Bluetooth Low Energy on Android, Raspberry Pi (NodeJS/HTML/JS) and a microcontroller (Mbed).

Competences

  • HBO ICT 11.3 SW/ANA/3
  • HBO ICT 14.3 SW/REA/3
  • HBO ICT 21.1 HI/ANA/1
  • HBO ICT 23.1 HI/ONT/1

Learning goals

The student understands wireless communication using radio, is familiar with modulation of radio signals, frequencies, bandwidth and standard radio communication issues, e.g. multipath fading, packet collision.
The student knows (the function of) MAC protocols for wireless communication and knows the difference between TDMA and CSMA.
The student can use a low-level/packet radio using a microcontroller platform (e.g. nrf24 or nrf905).
The student understands high level standardised wireless systems ( such as WiFi, Zigbee, Bluetooth Low Energy) and can apply these to a microcontroller, embedded computer and/or smartphone.
