In the minor Architectural Lighting Design you will discover the power of light as a design tool and learn how to use it to bring spaces to life.

The minor ALD responds to the need for skills to design substantively and spatially with light. To be able to use light as part of the spatial design. In this minor, students learn how to create a substantively relevant, applicable and complete lighting design. In order to use light properly and integrally in projects, they learn to develop light vision and lighting concepts, with which they can apply light in a well-substantiated manner. Students learn what the psychological and biological influence of light is, and how it can be used in lighting design. They learn what the influence is on the spatial experience and visual perception and how they can contribute to a spatial design.

Light is playing an increasingly important role in an increasing number of disciplines. In interior design and architecture, and in design of outdoor spaces, public spaces and urban environments. But also in other fields such as game and animation design, exhibitions, museums and retail. Due to the enormous development of LED technology and its control, the possibilities are growing rapidly. This creates a growing need for knowledge of technology and the meaningful use of light in projects. Light is increasingly becoming an integral part of spatial design. And more and more attention is being paid to topics such as sustainability and energy consumption and ecology, lighting comfort, and the biological and psychological effects of light (Human Centric Lighting). Due to the increasing possibilities with light and the increasing attention to quality and experience, the substantiated, meaningful and qualitative use of light is becoming increasingly important.

This concerns integrated education that includes the following components:
- Art & Culture (new media)
- Spatial design (conceptual design, design thinking, rapid prototyping)
- Technology (software skills [including Vectorworks, Sketch-up, Enscape, Adobe, etc.], rendering, video technology VR, AR, MR, light simulations, LED technology)
- Human Experience (design based on user experience and behavior)
- Research (experimentation, user research, lighting research)
- Presentation (interviewing, pitching)

Working methods include seminars, hearing/guest lectures, consultations, self-study and excursions (study trip if possible).
- The students are guided by design teachers during seminars.
- The lectures (in the form of knowledge clips) are given by content experts.
- The guidance takes place at both an individual level and at a group level.

The minor is intended for 3rd and/or 4th year bachelor students of Interior Design, Architecture and Urban Design.
The minor may also be interesting for students of related bachelor's programs offered through Kies op Maat (KOM). Are you studying a related bachelor's program and would you like to take the minor? Please contact the minor coordinator.

The student is assessed by means of a product test. A product test revolves around a professional product, in which answering a question and/or solving a problem from professional practice is central.
