Imagine being able to transform the world around you into an immersive experience. During the minor Immersive 4D Design you will have the opportunity to experiment with innovative solutions for spatial projects. With tools such as virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR), projections, scent and sound design, you as a future designer have powerful tools to create groundbreaking and sustainable designs, with which you can convey the desired story and experience.

Immersive 4D Design

This inspiring minor offers you the opportunity to work on challenging issues together with a multidisciplinary team, using cutting-edge technologies. It is the ultimate launching pad for anyone aspiring to a career in VR and XR technology.

During the minor, both individual growth and collaboration are central. You will work on challenging issues together with a small group of 4 to 5 students. Education is offered in a mix of blended and integrated learning. The project covers various disciplines, including art and culture, spatial design, technology, user experience, entrepreneurship, communication, applied design research and sustainable development goals.

This minor is located at the intersection of humanity and technology, inspired by the renowned IDEO model of Stanford University.

The following activities occur in the design process: storyline development, 3D modelling, linking or programing interactions, editing trailers, teasers and showreels, using research data and doing additional research.

The minor is intended for students of the Interior Design & Styling, Creative Media and Game Technology, Fashion and Textile Technology, Industrieel Product Ontwerp, Creative Business, Stedenbouwkundig Ontwerpen, Archeologie and Bouwkunde programs at Saxion.

Furthermore, the minor is also interesting for students from Design at Minerva Academy, Architectural design at Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Spatial Design at Willem de Kooning Academy, Spatial Design at Utrecht School of the Arts, Interior architecture at Artez and Interior architecture and furniture designs at KABK.

Students with a background other than the mentioned courses must first contact the coordinator. We assess the admission of students from other courses based on their motivation, which must clearly show how they fit in with the education offered. We value a diverse and multidisciplinary group, in which different perspectives and expertise come together. Basic knowledge of 3D modeling is the starting point, together with owning a (gaming) laptop with a good graphics card.

At the end of the semester, your design and process will be summatively tested against the assessment criteria: culture, technology, business, creativity and reasoning. After a positive assessment you will receive 30 credits.

Every five weeks you present (partial) products, evaluate the process, give and receive (peer) feedback and make agreements. For the final assessment, you are assessed based on the realized designs or products supported by sketches, ideas and designs and your own learning goals.

In this minor you work closely with fellow students. As a design team, you work on a unique assignment that you have put together yourself, with differences in users, functions, wishes and objectives.
