Global Citizenship

General Idea:

Global Citizenship refers to the knowledge and skills needed to engage in global issues on a local level and to enable people with different backgrounds to work together on goals related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A global citizen can use this knowledge and skills  in their own profession. The practice-based, multi-disciplinary and intercultural (diversity) approach of the programme (courses, research- and practical activities) will inspire and motivate you to make Global Citizenship a part of your personal and professional identity.

International dimension: “Meet, work, interact and celebrate life with other students from all over Europe and beyond.”

The Project

Together with an existing organisation and a small group of fellow students you will work on an actual problem related to the SDGs. You will be given the opportunity to really make a change, as you will develop a project plan and implement this within the organisation.

The implementation and evaluation of  the project will take place during the second half of the Minor either in the Netherlands or abroad.

Professional and Personal Development

During the whole duration of the Minor you will work on your professional and personal development as a Global Citizen, supervised by a coach.

1. Your challenge: “Learn to look and think beyond borders.”

In essence, global citizenship refers to tackling global issues to help support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This minor facilitates students from different study programmes to work together in a multidisciplinary team. We will combine knowledge, insights and skills from your diverse backgrounds to create a dynamic and explorative environment to study Global Citizenship. This all takes place in the context of various practices, especially Health Care, Education, Social Work and Employment.

The following topics are addressed in the minor:

• Global Citizenship in theory and practice 
• Working as a professional in local communities, employment, health care and/or education 
• Intercultural communication and -sensitivity
• Diversity competence 
• National identity – transnational identity 
• Cultural awareness and -diversity 
• Ethics and moral diversity 
• (Anti) Radicalization 

You will work on your project during the classes of the Global Citizenship in Practice (GCIP) in quartile one. You will execute and evaluate your project during quartile two.

 A coach will guide you throughout your project work and professional and personal development. 

The language of instruction is English. All students (Dutch and international students) are welcome to join!

This minor consists of 30 ECTs divided in four assessments.

The Project
Project Report / Presentation (15 ECTs) The project assessment is a group assignment which consists of a project plan, implementation and an impact assessment (Evaluation Report) engaging the issues regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) in an organization in the Netherlands or abroad.

Personal and Professional Development

1. Personal Professional Learning Goals (5 ECTs) In quarter one you formulate your (SMART) Personal and Professional Learning Goals and plan of approach. At the end of the first and second quarter you describe the progress you have made concerning your goals.
2. Essay (5 ECTs) In quarter one you will write an essay about your development as a Global Citizen. In this essay you describe your meaningful experiences: content of classes, assignments and activities. You answer the question: ‘Who am I as a global citizen?’
3. Final Assessment (5 ECTs) In the final assessment you will present and discuss your Personal and Professional learning outcomes regarding this minor.

This minor is open for students, both national and international, with an interest in Health Care, Education, Social Work and Employment.

This minor consists of 30 ECTs divided in six assessments.

The Project (15 ECTs)

The project is a group assignment in which you work with students with different cultural and professional backgrounds on issues regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an organisation in the Netherlands or abroad. You develop a project plan, implement your project in practice and legitimate and evaluate it ethically and scientifically. During this process you put what you have learned about Global Citizenship into practice.
There are three assessments connected to the project:

• The Project Plan (assessment 1 – 5 ECTs)
• The Project Report (assessment 2 – 5 ECTs)
• The Project Presentation (assessment 3 – 5 ECTs).

Personal and Professional Development (15 ECTs)

You will develop yourself as a Global Citizen and as a future professional by completing various assignments (reports, presentations and other activities) offered in the modules of the minor. Your personal and professional development will be assessed using three methods:

• The Individual Professional Learning Goals (assessment 4 – 5 ECTs)
  You write a development report in which you describe your (SMART) Individual Professional Learning Goals and plan of approach.

1. The Essay (assessment 5 – 5 ECTs)
   In quartile one you will write an essay about your development as a Global Citizen. In this essay 
2. you describe meaningful experiences you encountered: content of classes, assignments and activities. You answer the question: ‘Who am I as a global citizen?’
3. The Professional Development Presentation (assessment 6 – 5 ECTs).
   You present your development as a Global Citizen and future professional based on the learning outcomes of the minor; content of the modules, activities, project work and other meaningful experiences.
