Studium Generale: Seriously funny - Humour in the age of polarization
Location: Concordia Enschede
In this programme, we explore the role of cabaret and jokes in an age of strong opinions and social divisions with humour researcher Dick Zijp. What do we laugh at, and what does that say about who we are and the group we belong to? Can humour bring people closer together in a polarized society, or does it, on the contrary, painfully expose the differences? And can a joke go too far?
With live cabaret from none other than Wina Ricardo and Stefan Hendrikx, theory becomes practice straight away. They demonstrate – and let you experience – how humour works: as a means of relaxation, as a form of confrontation, and sometimes even as a bridge to others!
And the best bit? You’ll learn something from it too. Discover why some jokes work, how you can use humour effectively in conversations and communication, and how a touch of light-heartedness can sometimes achieve exactly what a serious argument cannot.
