Mapathon for the Red Cross
First-year Applied Safety & Security Studies and Security Management students started a mapathon today in Deventer and Enschede. They analysed satellite images of Nepal for the Red Cross. The completed maps are intended for emergency workers in the event of a catastrophe.
A mapathon is a way to digitally map out and connect the most vulnerable places in developing countries. The resulting maps and data are designed to be used by local and international organisations to better respond to crises affecting these areas. Humanitarian organisations around the world depend on up-to-date maps to operate successfully.
During the mapathon, Saxion students traced out and drew more than 7200 buildings and added more than 190 kilometres of road. The results are also available on missingmaps.org/leaderboards/#/saxion100220.
