Update 27: Term 1 - High quality education spread out over the day(s)

Reading time Minutes

In this update we will walk you through how the principles by which the timetable for term 1 has been compiled, and we will tell you how Saxion facilitates safe studying and working at its locations.

Spreading education over the day(s)

The (regional) public transport providers have made an explicit request to continue to avoid peak travel times in the morning (between 08:00 and 09:00 and between 15:30 and 18:30). For this reason we must regulate the flow of students to and from Saxion buildings. Some travel will be allowed during the peak travel times, although to a limited degree. Saxion will therefore begin practical education at 08:30 in specific locations for a very small group of students. The remaining classes will begin at 09:30, sufficiently spread out over the whole day.

Work on scheduling will begin with this as foundational principle. This will be completed in the summer and the definitive schedule will be published by 24 August at the latest. The number of students who used public transport before the corona crisis will be reduced to 40% due to the current circumstances. We base calculations on how many students will travel to our buildings per allocated time slot. Based on this we will be able to regulate the total flow of students to our buildings. This will of course be conducted in ongoing consultation with all schools and public transportation providers.

How does Saxion facilitate safe studying and working at its locations?

We strive for an optimal layout of the buildings with due observance of the RIVM guidelines, including the 1.5 metre rule. The basic principle is to make everything as hospitable and ‘normal’ as possible, so that it is easy for our students and employees to adhere to the rules. The buildings are arranged in such a way that you can guarantee 1.5 metres between study and workplaces and conscious and careful attention has been paid to keeping an appropriate distance while passing each other. Pay attention not only to your own safety, but also that of other people within the buildings of Saxion.

When you come to the Saxion buildings after the summer holidays, you can move through the building as smoothly as possible using clear signage and one-way traffic in the stairwell. When you arrive, you can disinfect your hands, and toilets will be cleaned more frequently on working days. Work and study spaces which have been used are cleaned daily, early in the morning before work starts. Furthermore, it is up to departments themselves to provide extra cleaning products as required, such as wipes or spray to clean your desk at other times. In terms of ventilation, Saxion's buildings have different air conditioning systems, but all of these use ‘fresh’ air.

Introduction week

Eight thousand new students will enter into Saxion education programmes this year. Digitally. For this, an extensive online festival site will be set up, with tents for different schools, and fun areas where, for example, a pub quiz can be held. In addition, smaller groups will be formed within classes, with studentcoaches (senior students) in attendance. Hopes are high that a small part can be conducted physically. This has suddenly become a possibility since the latest press conference. The idea will be to set up a Saxion terrace on Saxion premises. Possibilities on how this might be realised are currently being explored.
