19-12-2021 Corona-update: Third lockdown: what does this mean for Saxion?

Reading time Minutes

On Saturday 18 December 2021, the Cabinet took the decision that the Netherlands would enter a third lockdown, until at least 14 January 2022 and for higher education until at least 9 January 2022. Anka Mulder, President of the Executive Board: “This is an unpleasant message just before the Christmas holidays. We had not expected that 2021 would end like this and that is hard. Especially for our students as they now have to take online classes from home and for our colleagues who will once again have to fulfil a double role at home, who also have a duty as informal caregivers, and also for those who will have to work from home for even longer now.”

What is changing?
For higher education, this lockdown means that education will take place online (remotely) from Monday 20 December. This applies at least until 9 January, 2021.

Classes that are already planned to be online will go ahead online. The classes which have been scheduled in one of the buildings will be offered online from Monday. Students and lecturers will be informed by their school about practical classes that are take place on location on Monday.

On Tuesday morning 21 December, we expect to have the timetable up-to-date for the week before and after the Christmas break, so that it is clear which classes will take place in which form. We have chosen to organise education in this way in the week after the Christmas holidays, so that there are no new changes to your schedule.

Exams, practical education, internships and research activities

  • All exams to be held on location will go ahead as planned, and will be sat in a safe setting with due observance of corona measures. In the event that a student is unable to take an exam, they will still retain their exam option. There are a limited number of exam opportunities per year, so our advice is to use the exam opportunity if possible.
  • Practical education involves classes that cannot take place online as they for example require specific materials and/or rooms that are only available on location. If a practical class is going ahead on location, then this will be visible in your timetable by way of a room number. Of course, practical classes will also take place in a safe manner.
  • For internships, students must follow the rules that apply to the sector/ field in which the internship takes place. If those activities continue, the internship may also continue.
  • As now, research activities can only take place on location if they are strictly location-bound.

Remember to self-test before going to Saxion
We ask you to do a coronavirus self-test before going to Saxion. The Cabinet advises you to do this twice a week. You can order free self-tests at zelftestonderwijs.nl.

Anka Mulder: “We realise that the corona crisis demands a lot of our staff and students. Despite everything, we wish everybody a happy Christmas holiday.”
