Funding for archaeological project: Be Wise with Wijk!

Reading time Minutes

The Sustainable Areas and Soil Transitions research group, together with its project partners, has been awarded €473,188 from the Dutch Archaeology Innovation Fund of the Reuvens Foundation (Stichting Reuvens). This funding will enable the implementation of the Be Wise with Wijk! project, which aims to develop a 3D-subsurface model of the Dutch city of Wijk bij Duurstede: the modern town built on the site of the Early Medieval trading settlement of Dorestad.

The project brings together existing archaeological data and soil data in a so-called digital twin. This will improve the prediction of archaeological potential and the impact of spatial developments. The concept has previously been applied successfully in the city of York through the York City Deposit Model. Wijk bij Duurstede has been selected as the Dutch case study because of its exceptionally rich archaeological record and high density of available coring data.

The project starts in September 2026 and runs until the end of 2028. The consortium consists of the Saxion University of Applied Sciences, EARTH Integrated Archaeology, the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede, The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS)?, AOC Archaeology, York Archaeology and Esri Nederland. In the long term, the methodology developed within the project is intended to be applicable not only in Wijk bij Duurstede, but also for other municipalities and professionals in the archaeological sector.
