Decision on chemistry bachelor's degree programme in Deventer

Reading time Minutes

The Executive Board has decided to stop offering the bachelor's degree programme in chemistry at Saxion Deventer as of the academic year 2027 – 2028. This means that this study programme will be gradually phased out over the coming years. Those involved have already been informed of the decision. Besides Deventer, chemistry is also offered at Saxion in Enschede where it will continue to be available.

Careful consideration

This decision was taken after careful consideration in which various scenarios for the future of the programme were investigated and weighed up. Student numbers, the organisation of education, facilities and the future-proofing of the programme were all taken into account. Based on this, it was decided to concentrate the chemistry bachelor’s degree programme in Enschede, where chemistry remains part of a strong technical environment.

Inge Grimm, President of the Executive Board: "The Chemistry programme is a wonderful programme, and we see the passion of our colleagues at the programme in Deventer and how they dedicate themselves to it every day. I realize that this is a good decision and that it is a difficult one for them. We have made the decision to phase out Chemistry in Deventer now in order to ensure the programme remains future-proof within Saxion and can continue operating from our location in Enschede."

Completing the programme in Deventer

Students who have started the chemistry programme in Deventer on or before 1 September 2026 can complete their programme in Deventer. From the 2027-2028 academic year, enrolment in Deventer will no longer be possible. New students can then follow the study programme in Enschede.

Follow-up process

In the coming period, the plan to phase out the chemistry bachelor’s degree programme in Deventer will be implemented in more detail. This includes agreements about the supervision of current and prospective students, support of the staff involved and the further organisation of education during the phase-out period. Employees and representative councils will be involved in this process.
