A look into the International Finance and Accounting programme with Suryo
Suryo is a double-degree student from Indonesia studying International Finance and Accounting at Saxion. He talks about his experience at Saxion, what he enjoys about his studies, life in Deventer and his ambitions for the future.
I dream of working in an investment firm.
What can you tell about yourself and about your study programme?
"I am a double degree student from Indonesia studying International Finance and Accounting. My study is filled with company financial reports in which I am doing lots of journalising, auditing, company mergers, and acquisitions, etc. It is full of numbers, but it's fun and challenging at the same time."
What do you like most about your study programme?
"The most favourite thing about my study programme is the flexibility of the class and the lecturer. I am not forced to join the class if I have other important stuff, as long as I can keep up with my studies. The lecturer is also friendly, and I can talk with them if there are any study-related issues."
What was the most difficult part of starting your studies at Saxion?
"The most difficult part of starting my study here is adapting to the learning system. In Saxion, I am refined to be a more independent individual as the lecturer is not going to check on each of us whether we have studied or not. They wanted us to learn more about our priorities and set what is important and what is not. I have learned how to spend my free time more wisely and use it for studying instead of playing games or watching movies."
What surprised you most about living in the Netherlands?
"The most surprising thing in the Netherlands for me is the amount of English speakers here. I don't have any trouble speaking with anyone, even the cashier at a nearby supermarket. It was a relief that almost everyone could speak English and it created a comfortable atmosphere where I didn't have to feel like an outsider who did not understand anything."
What do you like to do in your free time in Deventer?
"I live in Deventer. During my free time, I love to spend it walking around the city centre or the park near Saxion Housing. Walking around the city gave me a relaxing feeling and helped me to enjoy the city's beauty. Another place that is worth mentioning is the Deventer Library, located in the city centre. The library is a nice place to study and do productive tasks."
What are your ambitions for the future?
"I dream of working in an investment firm where I could spend most of my time analysing company performances and increasing my awareness of what's happening around the world. It has been my dream job ever since I enrolled in university and I am hoping that I can start my own investment firm in the future."
