Positive Health, Lifestyle and Leadership
Today’s healthcare is no longer primarily about preventing disease. People want to stay healthy and continue to participate in society. The focus needs to be on people and not diseases. To achieve this and contribute to a positive society, more attention needs to be paid to health promotion and self-management by patients. In other words: from illness and care to health and behaviour.
The key area Positive Health, Lifestyle and Leadership is being developed in collaboration with the MST and is in line with the upcoming vision ‘Key vision Medisch Spectrum Twente on vitality and lifestyle’. Primary objectives in this key area include:
1. Implementing the Positive Health Approach in healthcare and education;
2. Improving lifestyle based on the intrinsic motivation of patients, citizens, employees;
3. Increasing the leadership role of healthcare professionals.
Research Lines
Positive Health provides a new approach to health with a broader perspective on health which emphasises promoting self-reliance and resilience and is considerably more aligned with the intrinsic motivation of patients; lifestyle changes are a good example of Positive Health. Working from a Positive Health perspective requires the education and training of current and future health professionals.
A healthy lifestyle contributes to both mental and physical well-being and can also help prevent disease. Especially in hospitals, a lot can be gained by placing more emphasis on prevention and not just on treatment. This requires a good transfer and cooperation with primary care.
The Best Practice Unit method is being further developed, focusing on increasing the leadership role of healthcare professionals, interprofessional collaboration and also team learning together with the patient.
