Student success
The Student Success line of research investigates the mental and general well-being of students along with their personal and professional development, including how this relates to them graduating on time. We investigate how we, as an educational institution, can provide students with optimal support during their studies. We focus on the learning environment, the students themselves, and on the supervision given by lecturers (or study career counsellors).
Key themes of our research:
The line of research into the personal and professional development of students focuses on identifying working principles to support this development. What does this mean for the design of the learning environment, for the students themselves, and for the supervision given by lecturers?
Within the theme of student well-being, we focus on important aspects of promoting student well-being in education through positive and preventive approaches. This includes, for example, attention to social bonding and the influence of guidance by lecturers and study career counsellors.
Projects
In this Comenius project, we explored how physical activity during higher education studies can contribute to students’ physical and mental health. The outcomes of this project have been incorporated into an inspiration guide for lecturers who want to get their students moving (more).
Institutions received funds from the National Education Programme to work on, among other things, student wellbeing in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. We conducted research into the outcomes of various interventions, in collaboration with ROC van Twente and the University of Twente.
Through our research, we promote the development of innovative physical learning spaces. Through these spaces, we aim to contribute to motivational education (active learning spaces) and student wellbeing within the university of applied sciences.
In this project, funded by TechYourFuture, we focus on new roles for lecturers, such as being a coach, aimed at developing more motivational and engaging forms of education. We support teaching teams and team leaders in strengthening their professional identity and developing their coaching skills.
In this project, we examine factors that influence student drop-out rates in applied university study programmes. We explore the factors that contribute to successfully completing studies. Along with the participating study programmes, we work on initiatives to reduce drop-out rates and improve study success.
