Blended learning
The Blended Learning line of research focuses on the design and implementation of blended and flexible education. We investigate at both programme and module level how designs contribute to the learning of students and lecturers and other aspects of student success. There is also a specific focus on the implications of new technology for student and lecturer learning.
Key themes of our research:
Blended Education research is the harmonious integration of different types of motivational physical and online teaching methods. This involves harnessing the value of physical and digital learning environments in relation to the intended goals, stages of learning and student characteristics. Flexible education aims to give students more responsibility in their own learning process, so that learning activities better meet their needs.
Within blended education research, we focus on the design process and design of blended education. What are implications of technological developments in shaping education and supporting the learning process? We investigate the impact of the chosen blend on student learning and success, and the implications for lecturers.
The aim of making education more flexible is to give students more responsibility for shaping their own learning process. We investigate the characteristics of flexible education at both programme and module level, the needs of students, and the implications of flexible education for students, lecturers and programmes.
Learning Space Development develops and researches different spatial concepts, including active learning spaces and immersive classrooms. We focus on both technical, organisational and didactic features of these spaces and the appropriate type of teaching. We investigate the needs and experiences of lecturers and students and how the teaching spaces contribute to student success.
Projects
In this Comenius project, we investigated the possibilities and limitations of introducing flexible learning within master's degree programmes at applied universities (2022–2025). Interventions were designed, implemented and evaluated based on students’ needs and the principles of the study programmes. Project results were used to create a toolbox. In this project, funded by NRO, we investigated how students’ study progress and sense of social bonding could be enhanced through using learning analytics. Nine lecturers (from ROC van Twente, Saxion and the University of Twente) redesigned their education for this end.
Through our research, we promote the development of innovative physical learning spaces. Through these spaces, we aim to contribute to motivational education (active learning spaces) and student wellbeing within the university of applied sciences.
