Impact of collaboration in complexity and transition

We are increasingly seeing that collaboration is necessary to tackle complex and transitional issues in society. Due to the multifaceted nature of current social issues, in most cases it is no longer possible to solve these kinds of practical problems within a single organization. The diversity of knowledge, insights, and backgrounds that collaboration between different (public or private) parties brings has great potential to make a lasting and sustainable impact on society. However, we also see that the great diversity of knowledge, insights, and backgrounds can make building collaboration a major challenge.

Our research

Within the Modeling Social Impact research group, we focus on the following themes related to the impact of collaborative initiatives:

  • We identify the intended effects and social impact;
  • We assist in setting up a theory of change;
  • We structurally monitor the effects that the collaborative initiative has on the intended results;
  • We offer guidance/advice on building a collaborative partnership that functions as optimally as possible.

To this end, we use various methodologies and methods, such as conducting (parts of) a social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA), developing and applying a Theory of Change (ToC), and using scientific literature studies, work sessions, (expert) interviews, and/or observations to further deepen knowledge and insights. We are happy to use the insights we have gained in the past to support and guide the development of partnerships.
