CrimeBots

This line of research focuses on the effective use of robotics in crime investigation, safety and security.

We investigate how robots and drones can transform research processes, making them more efficient, accurate and safe. Our robotic platforms, including Copper, Sniffer and Search, can be used to make investigations more efficient and effective. Investigators can quickly and safely carry out their crime scene investigations by using existing and new detection techniques. We aim to use this research to improve the capabilities of law enforcement and forensic teams and equip them with the technology needed to solve crimes and ensure public safety.

Key research themes in this research

In this research line we work on the following themes:

Crime Investigation

Our research in Crime Investigation focuses on the use of robotics and advanced technologies to improve crime investigation and prevention. This includes developing tools and methods that help in analysing crime scenes, collecting evidence and forensic investigations. We are working on technologies that support law enforcement in identifying suspects, 3D reconstruction of crime scenes and analysing physical evidence such as fingerprints, DNA and ballistics information. We are also exploring how robotics can be used in the surveillance and monitoring of criminal activities.

Search and Rescue

Our research in the field of Search and Rescue focuses on the development of robotic systems that help locate and rescue people during emergencies. This includes creating applications of drones and ground robots that can navigate through difficult terrain, such as collapsed buildings, dense forests or flooded areas. These robots are equipped with sensors and cameras to detect human presence, assess the environment and provide real-time data to rescue teams. We are also exploring the use of systems that can cooperate with human rescuers and so improve the speed and efficiency of search and rescue operations, especially in scenarios where time is crucial.

Surveillance and Security

Our research in Surveillance and Security focuses on the development of robotic systems for advanced security and surveillance. We design technologies that can monitor and secure different environments, including public areas, critical infrastructure and private property. These systems are equipped with advanced sensors, AI-driven analytics and autonomous capabilities to detect and respond to potential threats such as intruders, unauthorised access or suspicious activity. We are also working to integrate these robotic systems with existing security frameworks, enabling real-time alerts and coordinated responses to ensure maximum protection.

Digital Security

Our research in the field of digital security focuses on protecting digital infrastructures from cyber threats with the aid of advanced technologies. We are developing systems that can monitor networks, detect intrusions and respond to cyber-attacks in real time. This includes creating advanced algorithms for encryption, secure communication and protecting sensitive information. Our work also includes analysing and mitigating various forms of cybercrime, such as hacking, phishing and data breaches, to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of digital assets.
