Whether you are making small changes to improve your lifestyle in a more sustainable way or going completely sustainable, there has never been a better time to be aware of how your individual actions (or changes) can impact the world. But, where to get started? Below you’ll find some tips from students on how you can integrate small changes into your lifestyle in order to become more sustainable.

  1. Skip as much plastic as you can

You probably will be (negatively) surprised by your personal usage of plastic per day. You can easily try to cut down your plastic usage, by checking for alternatives. For example, you can start with buying reusable water bottles, coffee cups or lunch containers. Or buy a reusable cotton bag instead of using plastic bags at the supermarket.

  1. Lower your water usage

Don’t we all love a fresh shower in the morning to wake up or in the evening to relax? Unfortunately, water is a scare (at least in some parts of the world) and our most valuable resource. By taking short(er) showers, you can easily lower your water usage.

  1. Clothing swap

Want to change your wardrobe? Organize a clothing swap together with your friends. You will probably end up with a bunch of new stuff (for free!). Or, sell you clothes via swap platforms such as United Wardrobe or Vinted.

  1. Learn from other cultures

You never know what you can learn from your roommates or fellow classmates about recycling or integrating sustainability into your lifestyle. Each culture is impacted differently by the current environmental issues, so there’s probably a lot to learn from each other.

  1. Get a bike

Besides the fact that getting a bike is a must if you are living in the Netherlands, biking is a sustainable alternative form of transportation. Plus, you can easily save a lot of money by not having to take the train or by paying parking fees. And you can even by a second hand bike or rent a bike, to be fully sustainable.

  1. Become active or get inspired

There are plenty of online and offline movement that meaningfully address environmental challenges. You don’t necessarily need to become political active, but you can take a sneak peek at environmentally-focused platforms or associations. You might get inspired or find useful tips and tricks about a sustainable lifestyle. Keep an eye on the Green Office of Saxion, in order to be up-to-date on sustainability projects and initiatives.
