Reading time Minutes

On 19 May 2018, Physiotherapy student Elaine Houlihan received the Silver Global Citizen Award in Dublin for her volunteering work in India. Saxion admires Elaine’s passionate commitment and is proud to share her story with you!

Elaine followed a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy at Saxion University of Applied Sciences. In 2017 she spent the summer in Bangladore, India.

Elaine volunteered with the Irish based charity SERVE and worked as a physiotherapist with children and adults with disabilities.

Saxion is proud to put a spotlight on her selfless dedication and important contribution to the Indian community.

Life-changing experience

Elaine tells that she was excited to have the opportunity to work alongside with those who need the most support. It has been a life-changing experience for her:

My experience in India made me think twice at how lucky we really are here in Ireland to have access to nutritional food.

“It was indeed the fact that the families couldn’t afford the food to feed their children which was heartbreaking to see.”

Elaine continues her volunteering journey and will return to India this summer. Read more about Elaine’s experience in India on IntoSaxion.

About the Global Citizen Award

The Global Citizen Award (GCA) that Elaine won, is part of a programme that encourages international volunteers to use their overseas experience to take action and raise awareness of global justice on their return to Ireland.

Elaine is also an active promoter of the Sustainable Development Goals in Ireland.
