Are you considering studying abroad in 2026? Here’s where to start

A new year often feels like a moment to check and set new goals. What do you want to accomplish this year? And where do you want to be a few years from now? 2026 might be the year when you graduate from high school or obtain your bachelor’s degree. In that case, it could be wise to think about your next step. Have you ever considered studying abroad? You still have time to make this decision and add studying in the Netherlands to your New Year's resolutions for 2026.

Taking a first step towards studying in the Netherlands

If you want to start your studies in the Netherlands in September 2026, this is the perfect moment to get started. Begin by exploring different study programmes and see what catches your interest. Make a shortlist and check the entry requirements and application deadlines. These can differ per programme and depend on your nationality.

Do the study choice test and find out which programme suits you

It is also important to look at the financial side early on. Think about tuition fees, housing costs and daily expenses, and whether scholarships or student finance could apply to you. Taking time to research this now helps you stay in control and avoid last-minute stress later.

Create an overview with a monthly planning

Studying abroad is a whole new experience, as is the process of preparing for it. While it may feel overwhelming at first, having a clear overview of what you need to do can really help to avoid stress. The exact planning required depends on your deadlines, as these vary depending on your programme and nationality.

January

Start exploring study programmes that match your interests. Make a shortlist and write down entry requirements and application deadlines. This is also a good moment to check whether your previous education meets the admission criteria.

February

Join a Digital Discovery Day, the online event where you can meet Saxion. This is the moment to ask practical questions about studying in the Netherlands, such as costs, housing, application procedures and, if relevant, visa requirements. Talking to study programmes and the International Office early on helps you understand what to expect before the first deadlines arrive.

March

By March, you can expect your questions to become more specific. Therefore, the International Office hosts a series of webinars to help you be more prepared for your application and the big move to the Netherlands. As with Digital Discovery Day, the sessions focus on practical topics, but in greater detail and on a per-topic basis, such as housing or visa applications. If you would like to read ahead or refer to the information again later, you can also find additional onboarding details on the onboarding information page.

From this point onwards, your next steps will depend on your chosen programme, your nationality and your personal situation. The most important thing is that you have a clear starting point and know where to ask questions when deadlines start approaching.

Need some extra support?

If you have specific questions or would like more guidance, you don’t have to figure it out on your own. You can join our Digital Discovery Day on 18 February, or check whether Saxion will visit your home country.

Do you need help?

We will try to answer your question immediately or bring you in contact with somebody at Saxion who will be able to help you out.
