More and more people are living in cities. This has an effect on the way we live together and on the layout of the city. In Urban Design, you will learn how to create future-proof designs for a place, neighbourhood, village or city. As an urban designer, you will learn how to deal with a world that is changing rapidly in a creative and critical way. You will design solutions to issues in the city, exploring what the most ideal situation is.
Team work
During the programme, you and students from other Urban Studies courses work together to carry out projects. You will be trained to become an interdisciplinary ‘urban professional’, who knows how to connect people, design places, take a businesslike approach and define policymaking.
Future perspective
You will create future visions and perspectives when designing solutions related to different issues. You will apply your knowledge and skills and will be able to act resiliently to a rapidly changing society in which many challenges occur.
Additional skills
While working with students of Climate & Management, Spatial Planning and Public Administration courses, you will learn how to be creative and innovative in designing ideas and solutions to tomorrow’s urban challenges. Additional courses on Research and (intercultural) Communication will be taught to further develop your competencies as a young urban professional.

Urban design
As an urban designer, you develop creative concepts for the environment we live in. You have an eye for its beauty and quality and can link places to social trends and current affairs. Subjects include urban design and architecture. You will learn how people use a city and what urban design (research) models to apply in order to design a vibrant urban society. You are able to translate your ideas into powerful, future-proof solutions, which you work out in detail in drawings, mock-ups and/or a 3D presentation.

You will be trained to be a multidisciplinary ‘urban professional’, who knows how to connect people and places. You can analyse existing situations but also look to the future. Focussing on your in-depth knowledge and skills, you can respond in an agile way to a rapidly changing society.
