Modelling Social Impact
The Modelling Social Impact Research Group focuses on providing methodological insights into the social impacts of innovations, policies and other initiatives.
The knowledge gained will help to make public and/or private investments easier to account for. It will also help to ensure that innovations, policies and other initiatives deliver maximum social value in practice and in stakeholder engagement.
Our areas of expertise
Social impact
Through our research, we make social impact transparent. This helps to increase its impact on society.
Social value
Through our research, we make the costs and benefits transparent to society, thereby demonstrating social value.
Modelling impact
Our research focuses on a structured, evidence-based approach to the design, implementation and evaluation of effective, targeted interventions.

Our focus
The research group uses social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA) and other tools for the assessment of social impacts and values. As a methodology, the advantage of the SCBA is that it not only looks at the immediate short- and long-term intended effects, but also at the side effects that may occur and, most importantly, at the impact of these side effects on society. Looking at side effects alongside the direct intended effects gives a clear indication of what the social impact might be. This insight also provides guidance on how to increase social value.
Impact of social innovations
Social innovations have a profound impact on our society by providing innovative solutions to social, environmental and economic challenges. The Modelling Social Impact Research Group investigates this impact and how it can be improved.
Impact of technological innovations
Technical innovations play a crucial role in transforming society by introducing innovative technologies and processes that contribute to general prosperity. The Modelling Social Impact Research Group investigates the impact of these innovations and how they can be improved.
The Value of Probation
In 2017, Saxion started a collaboration with the three probation organisations in the Netherlands (3RO) - Reclassering Nederland, Stichting Verslavingsreclassering GGZ and Stichting Leger des Heils Jeugdbescherming & Reclassering. This collaboration aims to gain an understanding of what the social benefits of probation are and how they can be improved. Starting from this research question, we address questions such as: What are the social costs and benefits of a particular way of working; what are the effects on a client, a family, a neighbourhood or a city; which actors are important; what are good decisions and what is needed to make them?
News from the research group
How can we work together?
We collaborate closely with partners on applied scientific research and knowledge development. Through grants, commissioned research, lectures, workshops and customised education, we contribute to socially relevant projects to increase social impact and value.
We conduct research commissioned by organisations in the professional field. This research identifies the social impact of innovations, interventions, projects and policies. Based on the articulated needs, a research plan is drawn up to meet the knowledge requirements of the client.
We work with various professional groups to develop new knowledge and refine existing knowledge based on demand articulation. Together with consortia, we apply for grants from a variety of different funding bodies.
We consider the exchange and sharing of knowledge an important part of our research. We would like to invite you to collaborate. Whether it is a meeting, workshop, event or participation in a network, we are open to share our expertise and build new insights together.
On request, we can organise lectures, guest lectures, presentations and workshops. Through these, we communicate our latest findings and developments to professionals and students so that they can go straight to work with the latest knowledge in our field.

Our research team focuses on understanding the social impact of innovations, policies and other initiatives. They work under the guidance of Lector Attila A. Németh ir.
Collaboration research group, professional field and education
We collaborate with education and the field to integrate theory into practice. By actively participating in the development and updating of various training programmes, we ensure that our education is always relevant to the needs of society. By working together, we increase social impact and make it transparent.
