Online resilience
The Online Resilience Research Group works on practically applicable and scientifically substantiated products for strengthening the online resilience of individuals, organisations and society.
We work with professionals, scientists and students from diverse disciplines. Our three research lines remain key: Cyber-resilient Citizens, Cyber-resilient Organisations and Digital Society. We also use our Cyber Resilience LAB in all these research lines.
We are based at the Centre for Security and Digitalisation in Apeldoorn and one of the three coordinating research groups in Cyberweerbaar NL: a broad network of expertise of parties that work together on the cyber resilience of society.
Our expertise
Applied research
We help strengthen cyber resilience based on the principle of co-reliance: there is a network or community around every resident, employee and organisation. We work with these resilient communities to combat victimisation through online crime and other online forms of harmful behaviour. Individuals, organisations and communities need to be aware of online risks, how to prevent them and what to do if things go wrong.
Applied scientific research
We believe that higher professional education (HBO) research should contribute to improving professional practice and education. Ideally we conduct literature studies and empirical research - in the form of questionnaires, interviews, observations or experiments - as a prelude to the development of real interventions based on joint design research that we also evaluate (or have evaluated) in terms of its effects.
Research and education
We are happy to work with students from different year groups and fields of study. Our best students participate fully in our research group. This helps us form learning communities with the professional field and education relating to the security issues of today and the future.

Our focus
We contribute to societal security by developing applicable knowledge for professionals in public and private sectors, so that co-reliance and positive resilient online behaviour become the widely supported norm in the Eastern Netherlands region as well as the rest of the Netherlands.
Cyber-resilient citizens
In the Cyber Resilient Citizens line of research, we focus on strengthening the online resilience of vulnerable groups in society, including children (8 to 12 years), young people (12 to 16 years), seniors and people with a learning disability.
Cyber resilient organisations
We help public and private organisations increase their cyber resilience through the Cyber Resilient Organisations research line. Organisations run a high risk of becoming a victim of cyber incidents. Such incidents can have a major impact on the organisation and society. In addition, we help security organisations, such as the police, municipalities and their partners, to prevent and tackle online crime.
Digital Society
In the Digital Society research line, we focus on harmful online behaviour that puts pressure on public values and the democratic rule of law. Specifically, this concerns behaviours such as online discrimination against minorities, online threats and intimidation of administrators and civil servants, influencing by disinformation and the spread of conspiracy theories. This type of online behaviour poses complex issues for professionals and public organisations alike.
Resilience LAB
In our Cyber Resilience LAB, we investigate human behaviour in dealing with online risks. We focus on performing combined behavioural measurements. We do this at our LAB at the Centre for Security & Digitalisation and on location with professional partners and clients. This is how we contribute to knowledge development and build effective interventions and training courses.
Related news
The success of the collaboration with the Online Resilience Research Group means that we are able to employ a number of joint researchers. We form the core of the SPRONG Expertise Network Cyber Resilient Netherlands along with the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
How can we work together?
We work together in various ways including joint knowledge development based on grants, commissioned research, scientific research and sharing existing knowledge through lectures, workshops and tailor-made educational programmes in the context of further training.
We work with various professional groups to develop new knowledge and refine existing knowledge based on demand articulation. Together with consortia, we regularly apply for grants from various funding bodies.
We regularly perform commissioned research on behalf of organisations in our field, involving drawing up research plans with clients in order to develop the knowledge required.
We regularly conduct fundamental scientific research along with researchers from universities and other universities of applied sciences that is published both nationally and internationally in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
At the request of organisations and networks, we regularly give lectures, guest lectures, presentations and workshops that transfer knowledge developed to professionals and students in our field.

Collaboration between the research group, professional field and education
The research group collaborates with students from different years, fields of study and knowledge institutions. Examples of collaboration include: the Cybercrime Excellence Track, the Minor Cybercrime & Cyber Resilience; the Minor Cybersecurity; the research skills course for first-year students of Integral Security Science and Security Management; assignments in the Safety & Security lab of the Integral Security Science and Security Management programmes and the StadsLAB of the Public Administration programme. In addition, students from within and outside Saxion do internships with us and regularly do graduation assignments with us. We also give guest lectures at Saxion and other knowledge institutions on an ongoing basis.
