Hotel Management
As a hotel manager, it is your job to not only meet guests’ expectations but also to exceed them. This requires you to be hospitable and open to innovation and to have managerial talent, and your exchange semester helps you to develop these three core competences further. Ultimately, hotel management is about finding the right balance between ‘How should I run my business?’ and ‘How can I pamper my guests?’. During the five months in Apeldoorn, you gain more insights into how to achieve this.

Hotel Management is the ideal semester for students with international drive, entrepreneurial flair, commercial insight and a service-minded approach. In addition to management skills, considerable attention is paid to professional skills and theory in order to help you develop the right attitude for the industry.
This is a 2nd-year semester on our Hotel Management course. The complete semester is worth 30 European Credits (ECTS). Classes are held in Apeldoorn. The semester revolves around entrepreneurship in Hotel Management. You not only gain a lot of knowledge about the sector, but also develop your management skills.
Content
The Hotel Management exchange programme comprises the following modules:
- Entrepreneurship in Hotel Management
In this module, you develop an innovative and successful concept related to eating, drinking and/or sleeping. At the end of the module you deliver a well-motivated financial business plan for a distinctive concept.12 ECTS
- Quantitative Research
As the name suggests, the main focus in this module is on quantitative research. Within this area, you learn how to perform a survey in the field.6 ECTS
- Event Management
During this module you design, plan and organise an event for a real client from the field. You are required to operate on a tactical level.3 ECTS
- Intercultural Management Skills
This module prepares you to handle cultural differences within an international environment. By learning to understand different cultural values and apply relevant theories, you gain valuable insights into the international business world. Theory and practical activities support you in developing your research paper, for which you assume the role of an international manager.3 ECTS
- Business English 2
This module is designed to improve your confidence in your knowledge, skills and attitude in the English language. Subjects that are dealt with on this course are: international marketing, social relations, customer services and business meetings. By the end of this course you will have increased your business English vocabulary and be able to use it successfully, both in practical situations and for written communication.3 ECTS
- International HRM

This is a third-year semester on our course. The complete semester is worth 30 European Credits (ECTS): 18 ECTS for the four compulsory modules and 12 ECTS for the two optional modules that you choose. The semester is based on individual assessments.
All modules may be followed by students on both tourism management and hotel management bachelor’s courses. Please bear in mind the location of the optional modules; depending on your choice, you may have to travel between Apeldoorn and Deventer.
This semester consists of four compulsory modules which prepare you directly for business life. You learn to base decisions on evidence coming from scientific research or literature. Furthermore, the industry-related optional modules enable you to shape your personal profile by choosing your preferred field of expertise.

The Hospitality Business semester exchange programme comprises the following modules:
Compulsory modules
- Business Model Dynamics
This module focuses on organisations in a continuously changing world and their adaptive capability. You develop the ability to recognise, analyse, innovate and monitor business models at a strategic level.6 ECTS
- Management Accounting
During this module you write a paragraph of business advice based on correct and accurate financial calculations.3 ECTS
- Academic Review
How can results from scientific research be used to support management decisions? In this module you write an advisory review for a client, based on your literature research. The research publications are presented to you by HBS lecturers who are experts on a particular subject within facility management, tourism & leisure management and/or hotel management.3 ECTS
- Qualitative Research
You develop research questions for qualitative research. You then design a case study to answer those research questions, collect data by means of interviews and analyse the data using coding and structuring. Finally, you draw conclusions in which you answer your research questions.6 ECTS
Optional modules
- Impact of Events
You develop an innovative, successful and international event concept for a real client from the industry, taking into consideration that the event concept should add value for the client, their business and the event attendees.6 ECTS
- Connected Leadership
The goal of this module is to give you a reflective understanding of the impact of technological trends and emerging networks on leadership styles.6 ECTS
- Good Food
This module gives you insights into the global food system, equipping you to analyse various positions in the food debate and take up your own position. Upon completing this module, you will be able to make decisions regarding food concepts in the hospitality business based on an understanding of the main issues surrounding food.6 ECTS
- Living Technology
This module helps you to improve your innovative ability by taking you on a journey of living technology, which will enable you to discover the (latent) needs of guests/users within a hospitality context and link them to technical possibilities. In the final phase, you develop a first draft (prototype) version of your product/service. This process makes use of several theoretical models derived from service/product innovation and design, combined with technological know-how.6 ECTS
- Travel Technology
The goal of this module is to encourage cross-industry innovation by taking you on a journey in a multidisciplinary project to create innovative concepts which add value to a business proposition within the travel sector.6 ECTS
- Responsible Tourism
This module enables you to develop a critical view of the negative impact of tourism development. As responsible tourism is a complex phenomenon which concerns all stakeholders, this module examines responsibility from various perspectives within a topical context. In view of the growing demand for ethical tourism in today’s world, it is increasingly important to deviate from traditional tourism practices.6 ECTS
All compulsory courses are taught both in Deventer and in Apeldoorn. Most optional modules are taught in Deventer, except for Good Food, which is taught in Apeldoorn.
This is a 3rd-year semester in our Hotel Management course. The complete semester is worth 30 European Credits (ECTS). Classes are held in Apeldoorn. This module includes a study trip, but it is not compulsory to participate in the trip.

The Hotel Management exchange programme comprises the following modules:
- Hotel Management
The main module of this exchange programme starts with both an extensive external and internal analysis which is the basis for a strategic plan, written for a real international hotel. This plan is individually presented and students will have to defend their plans. Furthermore, attention is paid to Business English, another modern language, Change Management and running a hotel in a realistic business game.24 ECTS
- Business English 3
This is a training in strategic business communication skills, comprising negotiating skills, promotional writing and strategic speaking skills.3 ECTS
