Course Content
In this minor, it is important that you show ambition and take initiative. You will learn by doing and will be actively working on your own business and your entrepreneurial skills for a total of twenty weeks. You choose your own path and determine (partly) your own office hours.
We offer various activities such as workshops, guest lectures, networking events, and coaching sessions. Additionally, you will have plenty of room to engage in extracurricular activities, such as inspiration sessions and lunch meetings. All of our coaches have extensive experience, as they are or have been entrepreneurs themselves. We have business coaches with different areas of expertise, including service offerings, production, international trade, product innovation, and (online) retail. They are all ready to help you grow as an entrepreneur!
Some of the topics covered during the minor include:
- Who are you as an entrepreneur?
- Can you identify and validate ideas and opportunities?
- Financial aspects of your business, and what do you need to get started?
- How do you acquire a (family) business?
Startups from the minor
Social, entrepreneurial and proud owners of their own company, Helemaal Content. We are talking about creative commercial economics students Lotte and Merlin. "At the moment, we are busy growing Helemaal Content," they say.
Renske Teekens studies Applied Psychology, but fell ‘in love with entrepreneurship’, as she calls it, during her studies. Earlier, she never saw herself as an entrepreneur. That changed when Renske attended the Startup Entrepreneur minor of the Saxion Centre for Entrepreneurship (SCvO) last academic year. There, she not only received practical tools, but also developed more self-confidence to further shape her company Book bundles. Something she is now fully engaged in. ‘The most important thing I learned at the SCvO is that I can believe in myself,’ says Renske.
You will follow the minor at the Saxion Centre for Entrepreneurship (SCvO). We have beautiful and creative locations in Deventer and Enschede, offering a break from the standard school environment. SCvO has extensive expertise in entrepreneurship, with lecturers from practice and a wide network of both young and experienced entrepreneurs across various sectors. During the minor, you will be part of a community of practice, which includes entrepreneurs from the region. All the ingredients to give your entrepreneurship a boost!
A large part of the time will be spent working and learning at the location you registered for. Occasionally, you will travel to the other location to participate in an activity. So, from Deventer to Enschede, or vice versa.
Activities
The minor consists of a range of activities, e.g. guest lectures, meetings with mentors, workshops, network gatherings, Startup Café etc. This minor includes plenty of time and space for extracurricular activities, like motivational sessions and readings. This is all aimed at helping you excel in your own startup business. And you will be out on the road a lot; because many of your customers will be found outside of Saxion. While there is a lot of freedom offered in this minor, we do expect you to attend the scheduled mentor meetings, the tutorials and guest lectures, and regular participation in the drop-in consultation sessions.
You can follow our activities on:
This minor focuses on three specific target groups:
- You are a student with one or more ideas and want to literally turn them into a business.
- You are a student with a developed idea and have just started.
- You are a (Chamber of Commerce registered) startup with some revenue.
This is a challenging minor, and you can only achieve the end goal if you're willing to step out of your comfort zone and give it your all. In an introductory meeting, we will be happy to advise you on the opportunities available to you in this minor.
Why this minor?
This minor is aimed at people with entrepreneurial spirit, who want to be part of a startup and/or actually start their own company. You must have lots of initiative and be willing to learn in a hands-on way to participate in this minor. After passing this minor, you will be one step ahead if you want to graduate on a project related to your own business. We offer lots of freedom and independence, and an inspiring learning environment where you will have you own workspace. You will often work with experienced entrepreneurs.
In the Startup Entrepreneur minor, you will be assessed individually. A diverse range of assessment methods will be used to evaluate your development as an entrepreneur and assess the results of your business after 20 weeks. Sometimes you'll find yourself in a real Dragons' Den with actual investors, networking with FC Twente, Heracles, or the Eagles, or perhaps presenting your product at a trade fair. So, creative and varied assignments!
The guidance during the minor is intensive. Your business coach will provide honest feedback, highlight potential areas for development, and identify opportunities. We also use a lot of peer feedback because we want to give you valuable insights into your development during the minor. After all, it's also about the process you've gone through on your "entrepreneurial journey." Will you give your entrepreneurship a boost with the Startup Entrepreneur minor?
