During a semester you will work on tourism projects for real clients. It will help you build commercial awareness when understanding competitors and clients, so that you are able to spot promising opportunities and capitalise on them. You will learn to achieve commercial success in a manner that respects human beings and the natural environment. You learn to translate the wishes of your guests into appealing and innovative tourism and leisure concepts and you will become adept at creating wonderful experiences and at providing a warm and welcoming service to all of your clients.

Study Year 2

Devise an innovative concept for the tourism sector

Devise an innovative concept for the tourism sector If you enjoy coming up with new ideas and concepts, this term will appeal to you, as you will be designing a concept, or travel concept, for tourists and leisure customers. You will achieve this with the help of innovative tools such as virtual reality apps, personalised apps and robots. You may wish to use your idea to set up your own business or you may prefer to design an innovative concept for an established business. It is entirely up to you!

It goes without saying that you will need to prove your idea is financially viable. You will also need to be aware of the latest developments in the tourism sector and be familiar with marketing principles, innovative tools and creative thinking.

Study Year 2

Solve dilemmas in the tourism sector

This term will focus on responsible tourism. You will be advising organisations facing certain dilemmas, such as helping travel agencies formulate a plan when offering holidays in countries where human rights are an issue, or where the environment and indigenous culture require protection. You will gain a strong grounding in the principles of economic responsibility so that you are able to resolve the types of dilemmas described above.

Study Year 3 | Semester 1

This is a 3rd-year semester on our Tourism Management course. The complete semester is worth 30 European Credits (ECTS). Classes are held in Deventer. The main module of this exchange programme focuses on the development and marketing of a destination from a strategic perspective. This module includes a study trip, but it is not compulsory to participate in the trip. 

The Destination Development exchange programme comprises the following modules:

Destination Development
Assuming the role of a governmental policy employee, you are tasked with writing a long-term vision for a destination's (either a country, a city or a region) Ministry of Tourism. The policy must be presented to the Ministry of Tourism, taking into consideration any constraints, changes and implications for the Destination Management Organisation structure.

Business English 3
This is a training in strategic business communication skills, comprising negotiating skills, promotional writing and strategic speaking skills.

Study Year 3 | Semester 2

The Smart Solutions Semester is an interdisciplinary research and development semester. During the semester, groups of six to eight students from at least three different degree programmes of Saxion will get hands-on with a complex issue from the professional field or a research group.

We create an interesting mix of different degree programmes, disciplines, experience, insights and talents. With your tourism expertise in marketing, management, destinations, customer knowledge, customer journey etc. you will add value into your project group. In the end, you will present your outcomes to the client on an event.

Hanseatic city, Koekstad, Boekenstad, but of course the most important: student city. The narrow streets with nice boutiques and the Brink make Deventer very cozy. It is a city where you are quickly known, but where there is always something new to discover.
