We also create working methods for ethical reflection within our Wise with Technology and Ethical Parallel Track.

Our products

The Ethical Parallel Track focuses on technology developers and innovation projects. Wise with Technology is aimed at technology developers of the future: students and pupils. We use some working methods, such as the Product Impact Tool, the Ethical Stakeholder Dialogue and the Ethical Readiness Check, in both programmes.

The term technological readiness level indicates how far an innovation has progressed technically. In the same way, we can speak of ethical readiness: what about the ethical aspects?

The Ethical Readiness Check consists of a number of questions about ‘means and end’ that help ethical reflection on an innovation.

Does the means serve a good purpose? Is it a good means to an end?
  • What is the end objective?
  • Is it a good objective?
  • Conflicting values?
  • Ulterior motives?
  • Does the means work?
  • Better than other means?
  • Abuse?
  • Side effects?

In the stakeholder analysis variant for ethics and technology, the emphasis is on dialogue on values. And everyone involved gets a voice, including voiceless stakeholders such as animals or the environment, and technical things.

The Ethical Stakeholder Dialogue is conducted as a conversation in which as many stakeholders as possible participate, or are represented.

  • What kinds of different stakeholders are there?
  • Are there also voiceless groups or things that deserve representation?
  • Is there a difference in impact for different groups?
  • What (conflicting) interests are at stake?
  • What values are at stake?
  • Is it possible to reach a recognition of different perspectives?

The Product Impact Tool consists of a model with influences of technology at different levels (supplemented with explanations and examples in the web version). The tool helps anticipate impact, design for desired impact, and evaluates the impact of technology actually in use.

The background influences are most important when it comes to anticipating the impact of new technology.

  • What are the preconditions for successful use?
  • What side effects can counteract success?

More information about the Product Impact Tool can be found here.
