Business models
The Business Models Research Group investigates how entrepreneurship in chains, networks and ecosystems leads to sustainable, multiple and shared value creation, and the role digitalisation plays in this process. We translate our knowledge into methods and tools for the effective design, testing and adaptation of impactful, smart business models.
Our areas of expertise
Sustainable and smart value creation
We conduct research into new business models driven by the transition to a sustainable society and into digitalisation as a vehicle of sustainable transformation.
An interdisciplinary and applied approach to research
Our research and projects are characterised by transdisciplinary collaboration in resolving questions arising from business practice.
Practical applications for organisations and students
We translate knowledge into practical methods and tools for business model innovation that we make available to entrepreneurs and students.
New about the research group
Our focus
A business model combines value creation with organisational structure and a revenue model. The Business Models Research Group’s research and projects focus on future-oriented business models in which sustainable, multiple and smart value creation is key.
Circular Business Models (CBM)
The CBM research line explores the issues surrounding the design and management of sustainable, circular and inclusive organisations and networks. Research and activities are concerned with achieving economic stability, ecological regeneration and equitable access to sustainable resources, both now and in the future.
Business Model Transformation (BMT)
The BMT line of research explores and develops practical knowledge, methods and tools that help organisations transform into meaningful systems in a sustainable society. We investigate how digital innovation contributes to the development, monitoring and recording of new value sets and how systems can be set up to achieve the desired transformation to smart, sustainable organisations.
Business Model Lab
We translate many of our research findings into practical applications and tools for entrepreneurs, organisations and students. We are digitalising these tools and making them available at our online Business Model Lab. We organise training courses and in-depth sessions at our physical Business Model Lab in Enschede or on location.

How can we work together?
We work inside and outside the region with companies, knowledge and other institutions, sector organisations, support organisations, and government bodies. In addition to permanent staff, a variety of lecturers and trainees in our network perform work for the research group for shorter or longer periods as part of specific projects and educational programmes.
Collaboration between the research group, professional field and education
We encourage and support education and student research by developing and offering minors, graduation assignment positions and interdisciplinary project education (e.g. in the Smart Solutions Semester). This allows students from different study programmes to work together on complex organisational issues aimed at sustainable change. We support applied university schools and professional groups in developing high-quality education concerning sustainable business models. We actively contribute to the dissemination of knowledge, skills and experience necessary for the transition to a sustainable and inclusive society through practical cooperation with regional partners.
