Early Childhood Education

In an era of Appropriate Education, with more diverse groups of pupils, and the equal opportunities agenda, a strong call is made on the professionalism of teachers, internal and external counsellors and school leaders. The research group contributes to the development of vision and professionalism of teachers, in the areas of early childhood and language.

Our areas of expertise

Encouraging the development of young children

The research group supports boards and schools in developing a vision on early childhood education and supports early years teachers in their practice.

Equal opportunities and effective language teaching

Language proficiency scores are falling. This indicates that in order to provide more equal opportunities, there needs to be a focus on basic skills, language and reading.

Personal safety at school

A safe school environment is necessary for good learning. But bullying is a persistent problem that requires attention.

Our focus

The research group contributes to the knowledge and skills of professionals and teachers so that they can support the development of young children. The research group responds to the current need for professionalisation in the field of broad development stimulation. This concerns the primary process (interaction) between teacher and pupil.

Early childhood education

Early developmental outcomes lay the foundation for later development. For young children, stimulating development in the broadest sense is more likely to be successful than for older pupils and has a direct impact on later educational success. Our Professional Learning Communities include support for lower primary teachers on topics such as learning through play.

Equal opportunities and language

Language is the tool for learning and acquiring new knowledge. To ensure equal opportunities, it is necessary to optimise the pedagogical and educational provision in language education for pupils at risk. The question here is how teachers can effectively stimulate language performance of their pupils.

Personal safety at school

According to the Safety in School Act (2015), schools must meet various requirements in order to offer a living safety policy. The research group advises and supports schools in mapping and improving personal safety through positive behaviour support and social-emotional learning.

How can we collaborate?

Collaboration is at the core of our research and consultancy work. Collaboration with partners from the field, such as schools, childcare organisations, libraries, consultancy firms, municipalities (local authorities) and province (regional authority). In addition, we collaborate closely with colleagues from other universities of applied sciences and research universities. We collaborate on the themes of VVE, Equal Opportunities and Language, and Personal Safety at School.

Would you like to collaborate on research? We always conduct research projects in collaboration with partners from the professional field. We investigate social issues that arise from practice.

Is there a need for professionalisation through in-service training? Based on our research, we offer refresher courses on current topics that are based on sound knowledge with theoretical depth. These courses enable schools to work on evidence-informed vision development and professionalisation.

Would you like to get in touch with other schools, the municipality or other experts? We have a large network and we would be delighted to help you on your way.

Collaboration between the research group, the professional field and education

The research group collaborates closely with the study programmes. The knowledge gained from the research is incorporated into the educational programmes of the School of Education, particularly in the PABO and AD PEP programmes. This is achieved by collaborating with lecturers on these programmes and by involving students in our research.
