FAQs on the Covid-19 situation for new students planning to start their studies in September 2020

***Please note that the information below is only for new students planning to start their Bachelor or Master studies at Saxion in September 2020 and are not in the Netherlands yet. This information does not apply to students starting a Short degree or students already studying at Saxion. 

Education from September 2020

It has been decided that almost all of our Bachelor and Master programmes starting from September 2020, until at least February 2021, will take place online. Please check the overview below for more information.

*International Business

Only the International Business programme will also offer the possibility to start with an offline programme in February 2021, at the location in Enschede, if you don't want to start the programme online in September 2020.

**Partly offline education

Due to their special type of education, the following study programmes cannot be offered online completely: PhysiotherapyElectrical & Electronic EngineeringApplied Computer Sciences and Master of Science in Applied Nanotechnology. These programmes will be partly offered offline on location.

We are already educating online for almost all lessons and students are very pleased with this. As soon as there is more information on other education offered at Saxion this will be announced here as well.

The travel ban has been lifted a from 1 July 2020 for the following countries: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Uruguay. Please check this website from the Dutch government with the latest information on travel restrictions to the Netherlands. 

In addition to this, if you are a student from the following countries and you have applied for a programme which is offered partly on-site, you are also allowed to travel to the Netherlands and start your studies in September 2020: Ukraine, Russia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Almost all the deadlines for application remain the same. Only for EU/EEA students the application deadline has been changed to 15 August 2020, depending on the programme. ​​​​​​A few expceptions to this (application deadline remains 1 July 2020) are the following programmes: all Master programmes, Short Degree programmes, the Bachelor programmes Hotel Management and Creative Media & Game Technology.  

It’s important for you to know that you can continue the application for your desired study programme at Saxion with no restrictions from our side. When you apply for a study programme at Saxion for the academic year starting in September 2020, you will have the possibility to withdraw your application with no further costs and with no further obligations at any time before 31 Augustus 2020. Should you have already paid your tuition fee, housing fee and/or insurance fee at that moment then these fees will be refunded to you completely. The visa & residence permit fee will also be refunded to you when we have not yet started the procedure for the application of your visa and residence permit. We would like to highlight that we can inform you better about all the developments after your application, so it’s essential to finish the application for your desired programme and scholarship as soon as possible.

If necessary Saxion will soften the deadline for the submission of your documents after your application (high school diploma, language certificates etc.). The new deadline for submitting application documents is still to be determined. Please check this page regularly for more information and any changes. Please note: the deadline for your application will remain the same, you will have the possibility to withdraw your application with no further costs and with no further obligations at any time before 31 Augustus 2020. Should you have already paid your tuition fee, housing fee and/or insurance fee at that moment then these fees will be refunded to you completely. The visa & residence permit fee will also be refunded to you when we have not yet started the procedure for the application of your visa and residence permit. We would like to highlight that we can inform you better about all the developments after your application, so it’s essential to finish the application for your desired programme and scholarship as soon as possible.

There are no changes in the payment deadlines other then the exception below:

For new students outside the EU/Schengen starting the online programme per September 2020: In order to start your online classes in time, your payment or first instalment must be arranged by 31 August. Via e-mail you will receive information about payment of the tuition fee*, which you can either pay at once or in 3 instalments. Your payment must be arranged by 1st of July in order to start the visa application on time. 

*If you have applied for a scholarship and you have received a confirmation letter that it has been granted to you, the amount of the scholarship will be deducted from the tuition fee. 

No, the deadline for scholarships remains the same. As a Non-EU student you can continue to apply for a scholarship until 1 May 2020. For more information please check the website.

The Immigration Services is taking this into consideration the coming weeks, as soon as there is more information this will be announced here.

Yes, you will have the possibility to withdraw your application with no further costs and with no further obligations at any time before 31 Augustus 2020. Should you have already paid your tuition fee, housing fee, Visa fee and/or insurance fee at that moment then these fees will be refunded to you completely. 

To meet the needs of students who are unable to take the TOEFL iBT® test at a test center due to public health concerns, ETS is temporarily offering the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test in selected areas. The test is identical in content, format and on-screen experience to the TOEFL iBT test taken at a test center. It is taken on your own computer at home and is securely monitored by a human proctor online through ProctorU®. For further information check here.

Although it is not possible for you to travel to the Netherlands at this moment, this may change after 1 July 2020. We will already apply for your visa before this deadline.This will ensure that you will have your visa ready in time for travel to the Netherlands before 1st September 2020. Should there be regulations after 1st July which do not make it possible for you to travel to the Netherlands then the total package fee (incl. visa fee) will be refunded to you completely.

Saxion understands that you would like to cancel your application, you can do this via Studielink. Of course, you are more than welcome to submit your application for the following academic year of 2021-2022 and we hope that we can welcome you on our campus at Saxion! It will be possible to submit new applications from October 2020 for September 2021. 

In case you have already made the payment of the total package fee to Saxion and you cancel your application, you are entitled to a full refund. You will then need to cancel your application before  
31 August 2020.  

Here you will find the bank details form. Please fill out this form with your Dutch bank account and make sure to add a written signature. Once you filled out the form, please send this form by e-mail to our Finance Department: finance@saxion.nl. The Finance Department will make sure to transfer the amount into your bank account as soon as possible, however please take into account that this process will take 2 weeks after Saxion received your form.

Please note that the information below is only applicable for the International Business programme
If you choose to defer your studies to February 2020 you need to cancel your current application in Studielink and apply again for the February intake via Studielink. It will be possible to submit a new application by October 2020. Please let us know if you need any assistance in this process: internationaloffice@saxion.nl 

Please note that this information only applies to students outside the EU/Schengen. Yes, via e-mail you will receive information about payment of the tuition fee**, which you can pay at once or in 3 instalments.

This means that you will have to be in the Netherlands at the start of the academic year 2020-2021. It is not possible to participate in this programme online. Which subjects of the programme will be taught at Saxion, will be announced at the start of the academic year. 

Please note that the situation in the Netherlands is not back to normal, we still have to deal with many restrictions because of the Covid-19 crisis. The Saxion building will limited access most of the time. At least 70% of all study programmes will be taught online which means you will spend most of your time at home, following classes in our digital learning space. Saxion will unfortunately not be able to offer you an on-site introduction. We will of course arrange a wonderful introduction programme for you, but it will only be offered online.    

Furthermore, public life still has its limitations in the Netherlands. We can go outside but we keep 1,5 meters distance to other people at all times. Group gatherings are limited and in some cases not allowed and at this moment all festivals and events are cancelled for the upcoming months. Public transportation is limited and facemasks are mandatory.   

 We understand that are looking forward to starting this new chapter in your life here in the Netherlands. your health is however the most important and due to the Covid-19 situation this means that unfortunately for the time being you will not be able to have ‘the normal student life’ here as before.  

 We want to inform you about these circumstances beforehand to prevent any disappointments once you arrive.   

No, unfortunately not. You can re-apply for a scholarship for September 2021.

Yes, you are. The amount of the scholarship will be settled proportionally with the tuition fees to be paid for February and September 2021. 

In case you are a NON-EU student and you opt for a Bachelor or Short Degree Programme on-site for February 2021 your room reservation will automatically be deferred. In case you are an EU student for a Bachelor or Short Degree Programme and you made a room reservation but would like to defer please contact internationaloffice@saxion.nl. Exchange students will have to contact their Saxion school to indicate their interest.

To receive a refund for the Housing (down)payment, please follow the steps below:

  1. Fill out this Bank Details Form. Please make sure to have a written signature on the form.
  2. Scan the filled out Bank Details Form with a written signature to finance@saxion.nl. Please mention: "cancellation housing (down)payment Refund" and your Saxion Student Number in your e-mail.
  3. The refund will be transferred as soon as possible but please take into account that this will take up to 2-3 weeks.
  4. Please note: deadline for cancellation is 31 August 2020.

We look forward to welcome you in the accommodation as of August 17th. Please keep in mind that we can only welcome you during the week from Mondays – Fridays and arrival should be before 5PM in Enschede or Deventer. Due to the current COVID-19 outbreak it might be that we unfortunately cannot offer our regular Schiphol airport pick-up service by bus. In this case you would have to make use of public transportation for travelling to Deventer and Enschede. Direct trains are going from Schiphol to both Deventer and Enschede.
